squeel off wheel at slow speed

Featured Replies

ok guys and gals, ive got an 04 vrs fabia and at slow speeds <30 mph i get a high pitched squeal from one of the drivers side wheels, poss back.

when i press the brakes it stops and then upon letting em go it often starts up again, very annoying in town traffic.

all this makes me 99% certain its brake related rather than wheel issue but is there any easy fix/checks i can do?

i dont want to goto the garage unless its the last resort as im in the never ending queue waiting for my new vrs so i could do without any extra expenditure if it can be at all avoided

any ideas??

p.s. the brakes seem to be working fine when applied

Rust lip on outside of discs

I got same problem

Rear pads seized in the caliper carrrier possibly I had a similar problem

determine wheather its front or rear. if you pull handbrake up slightly while driving and noise stops you know its from rear brakes if not and it stops on foot brake then fronts. as said above if you are confident strip brakes down, clean and grease up brakes noise should dissappear.

Just don't grease the pad face or discs

lol good shout that its me i just assume everyone knows how to do what i explain

Mine was doing this the other day when it was summer. :)

Since then I've changed all the pads as they were low. Should really have done the discs too but didn't have the tools to do it all at the time.

Discs are now on the to-do list, as is another set of rear pads, probably.

Smear (sparingly) copper based grease onto back of pads and areas like the locating lugs, that come into contact with back of pads in general.

If you think noise is from rear, when moving, partially apply handbrake to hear if tone changes.

When carrying out application of grease, you will see first hand the state of the discs and pads, as to whether to replace or not.

Fabia VRS rear discs and pads around £29.00 from E-Bay so not a big deal to replace.(Need a rewind tool)

With 'MINTEX' front discs and pads around £75.00 again from E-Bay, (brand names here I suggest), as main braking takes place at the front.

Rear discs rust quickly through lack of use (design flaw) with outer edge not used when braking, are very prone for this rust problem.

I have the same problem. Although has calmed down a lot recently. Think its the front as my back brakes have just been replaced!

cheers guys and gals, next time im in on my own ill try really hard breaking and see if its coz i dont break hard enough and rusting them, im very gentle on the brakes anyways. also ill try a little handbrake to determine if its front or back

im not too mechanically minded so if it comes to changing them it'd have to be a garage and so long as its nothing dangerous i could do without the expenditure, new vrs on the way sometime in the next decade

Rust lip on outside of discs

I have six month old discs and have rust round the outside lips, can I just file this off?

Use glass paper 60 grit.

If you do get rid of it, the edge rusting will soon return.

Rear pads do not use the full width of disc, hence the rust.

I buy new and replace rear discs and pads every 2/3 years they are cheap enough at £28.90 including postage from E-Bay.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Have cleaned the rust off in the past, but it soon quickly returns.

I have wondered on buying new discs whether to have the first 10mm skimmed off from the edge of disc, but the price paid for new ones don't really call for that chore. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Easy fix for the rear rust problem. Matt black manifold paint. Two bits of circular cardboard to mask the swept area of the disc, and paint the outer section and edge lip.
