Injector problems

Featured Replies

Hi all,

A year ago I had an injector replaced in my 54 plate Fabia VRS (ASZ engine) as it was misfiring on the 2nd cylinder. 1 year later and the same problem has resurfaced, again VagCom is showing a misfire on the 2nd cyclinder. Strange thing is when it happened the second time, I arrived at work, switched the engine off and when I went to drive the car home later that day all seemed well. I have driven about 200 miles since and is now showing the same signs - my mechanic thought it was worth chucking a tank of 'BP Ultimate' Diesel (or similar) in which I've done, it does seem slightly better till you get to 3rd gear and its juddering badly whilst accelerating (not too bad at idle though).

Anyway I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to get this injector changed...again, but I have a question which I'm hoping a 'tech' might be able to answer! There are 2 injectors listed for the ASZ engine in the Fabia VRS: 038130079BX, the second is the same apart from the last 2 letters which are 'AL'. A new injector from the stealers is around £600 mark so this isnt an option (I'd rather source a used engine if I had to pay this). When it happened the first time I bought a replacement injector from a breakers with the 'BX' part number which matched the faulty one fitted. In haste when the problem surfaced for the second time I did the same thing except upon closer inspection this injector is ending 'AL'. Does anyone know if either of the injectors will fit 'BX' or AL', what's the difference are they coded in some way?

When I was looking for a replacement injector the first time round I was told numerous times (from breaker yards) that the injector ending 'BX' is far rarer than the 'AL' part number but why?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks, John

try changing injector wiring loom first this runs inside the head and is always covered in oil goes brittle after awhile. iirc price was around 50-60 for a new one from tps. worth a try as its common fault across pd engine range

bet its the wiring loom mate, real common problem according to my local vag specialist

i wouldnt bother with a used one as we have had them go in work and visually you couldnt tell anything was wrong. for the price of a new loom IMO it isnt really worth messing around with.

Well that loom is mine and was working fine when I removed it. I bought a new head and it had everything in. It is in the for sale section I think here

out of interest how much did the head cost and what was included exactly?

Well it sounds better than the one I currently have fitted

Got it from a bora, 360 delivered, had injectors cam, buckets, valves etc

Go into VAGCOM and look up measuring block for engine Group 13

and post the results. Data will look something like the stuff below. Make sure engine is warmed up

Address 01: Engine (038 906 019 NJ)

11:35:13 Group 013: Idle Speed Smooth Running Control

-0.59 mg/str Cyl 1 -2.8 to +2.8 mg/H

-0.28 mg/str Cyl 2 -2.8 to +2.8 mg/H

0.47 mg/str Cyl 3 -2.8 to +2.8 mg/H

0.33 mg/str Cyl 4 -2.8 to +2.8 mg/H

Also check Group 18 (might be 16) and see if any of the injectors are flagged 1 (should all be zero)

Pretty sure it will either be the loom or the camshaft and buckets. Carefully check camshaft lobes for wear or change in profile. There should be an even chamfer all the way around a the edge of a cam lobe, and no signs of copper pick up. Check the bucket tappets are not dished, or breaking up.

i did this awhile ago and one of my injectors was pulling 1.04 is this anything to worry about moggytech??? engine was at idle and was warmed up

Spec is +/- 2.8 so not really an issue. But.... (there's always a but), some diesel gurus feel those specs are a bit too high, and may be VAG group trying to mask the issue of camshaft wear on some PD engines. If you take all 4 readings from the cylinders and add them together (some will be plus others Minus values)the result should be close to zero (basically balanced injection.)

Variations can be due to a number of reasons. Slight camshaft wear, engine tolerances, clogged or worn injector nozzle, injector wiring loom, bucket tappet sticking or worn, and just plain old mechanical tightness on one cylinder.

Crank speed does vary with each combustion stroke, and with the firing order being 1342, it's normal to see minus values for cylinders 1 and 2, and plus values for cylinders 3 and 4. The ECU looks at the engine speed sensor, and calculates the time it takes for the crank to rotate through 90 degrees. Crank speed is then 'balanced' by varying injection quantities on each power stroke.

I would do a cam and bucket inspection with that reading, or run double shot Millers for 400 miles and redo the readings.

If you post all four injection readings, I could give you a better idea of what's what.

if i get time at work ill stick it on the kts and give you the reading

Going back to my original post, does anyone know if you can fit either injector part number for the ASZ engine (038130079BX or AL)?

Thanks, John
