Brake issues

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

So I've been having some ongoing issues with my brakes, after putting some (resonably cheap, from GSF) brake pads in the front i started getting some pretty annoying pad slap, where both sides would knock when applying and releasing the brakes. Admittedly very annoying, but was told by my mechanic not to worry about it.

Now in the past few days i've started to get steering wheel shake when i brake, pretty much exactly what you would expect from a warped disc - the issue is that as the brakes heat up it seams to get a lot worse. I was driving from Sheffield to Manchester over snake pass on the weekend and about halfway across the car was shuddering horribly under braking, leave them to cooldown for a couple of mins and its just back to its normal shaking.

Is this normal? Should the shaking get worse as the brakes heat up or is it likely to be something else at work here? The car doesn't shake at all without the brakes on from stopped right up to (a shade over) 70mph(!) and when i apply the brakes hard it stops in a straight line (with a little squirreling from the back end, but i think that's more down to having rubbish suspension).

Also, i'm pretty put off buy cheap pads and discs - any sugestions of ones that will work and fit well? Its for a 1.9TDi (non-vrs)

Thanks!

Personally I would be going with a set of Pagid discs and pads, had the mintex before and it didn't take long for them to start rusting badly. The Pagid's are coated, keeps them looking tidy for far longer

I drive about 600miles a week so would be very surprised to see them rust up at all ;)

Coated with what? Discs start to wear the moment you brake after fitting them, so any coating will be gone in minutes. All decent discs are coated with anti rust grease, but this MUST be cleaned off before fitting.

The whole disc is painted silver when new. Pagid do this instead of greasing the discs so you can fit them and drive off without risk of getting grease on your pads. Any parts of the disc that don't come in contact with the pads, stay silver, and thus don't rust.

Yeh, it will be the cheapo pads causing problems, fit the Pagid discs and pads, much better.
