Hybrid turbo strength

Featured Replies

I'm just woundering if anyone has blown a hybrid turbo ?

Just wondering how strong they are and what kind of pressure they were running before they popped?

Jason has before now, not sure which make it was. Luke is running 240bhp on his TD one, when they sent it back to be checked for something they noted how well the condition was seal`s wise and said it could cope with more power. All down to how its treated tho tbh

I was reading up last night, as I want to know as well.

A fair few people (tdiclub) don't really seem to rate the 17/56 (MD376?) hybrids much. Apparently the 'hot side' is too small for the larger 56mm (or even 52mm) compressor wheel, which leads to high EMP (or was it EGT) and 'boost creep'. They didn't agree with Turbo Dynamics' clipping of the blades either and reckoned it would make matters worse.

I won't pretend to know what I am talking about, because I don't, but it made me sad face :(

Funny that derv doctor said something along the same lines when my mate spoke to them, just before trying to flog there own turbo  Theres a lot of he says she says in vag tuning i`v found, some sites trash some tuners while others love them, so it seems this is no different when it comes to parts too. If there was any big issues with turbo, with so many running them on here alone i`m sure we`d know.

You hear good and bad storys about all turbos and tuners but Turbo Dynamics would be top of my list to avoid. Cut-away blades just aren't any good for a tdi hybrid on a vnt17. I've heard of a lot of them failing too.

A hybrid VNT17 with an 18/56 is the way to go or if you want solid and more reliable power a 22/60 is a better option and has been proven to run a couple of cars bordering the 280 - 300bhp region.

Do these have the manifold attached and bolt straight on for those that just want around ~220 - 240BHP? After that it's in the realms of internal engine work... and I don't really have the money to go there.

I thought the MD376 would be good for about that, hence why I got it when my OE turbo blew :(

Running 240.1bhp through a MD376 (on AmD's RR) and TD said the turbo is in perfect condition and I can run more power if I want to... It gets used and abused hard, but is always warmed up and warmed down.

an 18/56 would support 240bhp no problem.

They are built from a standard VNT17 from a PD130 or PD150 so the exhaust manifold would bolt straight on.

Hopefully TD are producing good stuff again then. At one stage for a period of time there were a high number of complaints floating around the net on a few forums. It's hard to know what was hearsay but hard to ignore them at the same time.

Some good info there, seems as tho they are quite strong units in general, suppose thats what they are bilt for lol

I had mine from a different company to the normal company TD that most ppl use, i also payed around £150 less. They said they build theres exactly the same way. I suppose only time will tell how good it is :smirk:

I had an old skool hybrid vnt 25 on my golf tdi on a custom mani

Most go for the vk2260 iirc now

CR Turbos?

My mate is running a CR turbos hybrid and it seems to be solid as a rock and is putting out around 240ish.
