Crash Bar Removal

Featured Replies

Anyone removed their crash bar and left it off?

Less weight, better air flow

Considering it tbh

If I crash it's gunna wrap the car anyway, crash bar wont do **** all

Thoughts?

Part of the safety cell structure, your call.

If it'll definitely increase your chances of serious injury, is it work it for a bit less weight and better airflow? The MKI fabia is a rather old design now, less safe than a lot of models out there - do you really want to make old technology a little less safe?! I certainly wouldn't!

Is it worth the risk for what would be a minimal gain, if any ?

Plus, i would expect any bump you would have, would be void if you tried to claim ??

Even by cutting the crash bar for a fmic your basically making it a pointless item?

I have cut mine a bit out of the part which faces forwards, is vertically down. I believe (and I am no physics expert :D) that in an accident a piece of flat metal pointing downwards will not have as much impact potential as a piece of metal which is pointing outwards, i.e is horizontal to the ground. So I have left all horizontal bits, all the joining parts to the chassis legs, just taken a "notch" if you like, out the bottom bit, approx 2" high, and about 2 foot across.

I cut the front face out of mine as the rear is open in square sections anyhow.

Does'nt it stiffen the front end up making the body flex less?

You need it on the front to stop the chassis legs twisting

Best bet drill 5 or so 40-50mm holes in it, still strong as fook

I like that Tech1e

I cut the front face out of mine as the rear is open in square sections anyhow.

That looks like the best option!

thing is the crash bar distributes the load of an impact to the core via the inner wings more evenly, without the bar the first thing a impact encounters will be the mass of the engine and push it straight into the firewall bulkhead or just one inner wing taking the whole load

that has got to be bad

This is what i did

I've got 3 10cm holes in there and also I've drilled behind the reg plate, so if wanted I can remove it for track days etc.

Jase I couldnt fit my willy in those holes haha

Yes safety first though

4 x 40mm holes

Better than feck all

HHmmmmm.......having studied structural engineering an Uni....I really don't like what Tech1e did....and Big Jase is better (safer) but if it was me I would only drill small holes through the two flat bits between the three ribs......and I would cut as little of the top flange away a possiable!!! The top and bottom flanges (which are part of the top and bottom ribs, and the middle rib all combine to form the main force absorbing/deflecting structure...cutting big holes through the flanges and the ribs....well you might as well remove the crash bar for all the strength it now has.....especally if you do what Tech1e has done! :o
