Skoda vRS coilovers or lowering springs?

Featured Replies

I have been thinking about lowering my rs and I don't know what is best. I need advice from you guys :)

I have this kit in mind:

V-MAXX Skoda Octavia Mk1 vRS Coilover lowering kit , £468.00

My link

or I could simply buy lowering springs and put them under.

The coilover kit lowers by

* Adjustable height front - lowers by 35-50mm

* Adjustable height rear - lowers by 30-60mm

and I can only find lowering springs that lower by 35mm front and 20mm rear. What do you think?

What about the front lip. I guess I'll have to take that off. Do you know about any rs frontlip that does not lower the front?

here is a pic of my car with no height modification:

I have the VMAXX coilovers on mine and they're pretty decent. Firmer ride than stock but feel great when you're pressing on a bit.

They're on almost the highest adjustment on the rear and wound down at the front to match - There's about 4-5cm of thread left on the front I think.

You can get Weitec GT for that can't you? They get my vote, lots of us use them.

Made for the car too.

Don't bother with weitecs then, I had mine so you could just get 1 finger between tyre and arch front and back and the ride was ****! Handling is naff too going too low,

All coilovers are like that tho. The ride will be far too harsh.

Each to their own tho.

but it looks damn good :giggle:

okay I see. I really want to try driving with them before I buy hehe :p

But how long time does it take to adjust the coilovers and can you do it without lifting the car up?

jacking it up makes it easier as it takes the weight off the springs

your car looks a nice hight to me, mine was higher than that std iirc. the front end that is, how old is the susp on your car?

The Mk4 Family of cars dont handle that well if lowered

The best bet is to get a set of coilovers and have them at a decent ride height

Some thing like SPAX RSX will give you ride slightly firmer than stock with the bump and rebound settings wound right down but teeth shattering hard wound all the way up and then everything inbetween!

The worst thing you could do is buy a kit thats not bump and rebound ajustable and find its too hard or too soft, like the JOM kits!

Just something to consider, performance applications aside it may be worth paying that bit extra for an adjustable kit!

thanks for your opinion :), the front end just looks lower because I have the front lip on. But I think the suspension is original in my car, that is yr 2002 :)

yeah I agree with you. I don't think it is good to be stuck with lowering springs all year.

Though it may be cheaper to buy only the lowering springs I will probably be more satisfied with a adjustable coilover set :p

My front shocks were completely gone at 100,000km and 7 years old.

Rears weren't too bad, surprisingly.

Hi Poweraderz,

Just so you know mate I used to have VMAXX on my BMW and my life they were bloody terrible, really stiff (like silly stiff) after they were on the car for a bit I couldn't re-adjust them on the front (rears were ok) and gave quite a skittish feel to the car. It felt much better when it was on Eibach Sportline Springs and new OEM dampers.

If it was me I would look at something else like Weitec coilovers or KW :)

Just my 2p's worth :D

V-Maxx go pretty low but as mentioned are quite a firm kit but great value for money. We've done loads of Weitec Hicon GT kits for forum members and we have them on the shelf at the moment.

Give us a shout if you'd like any advise or prices.

Your car looks awesome!

I'd recommend coilovers, as they are less money than a set of springs and separate dampers, and give you adjustability.

I've had the Weitec GT's fitted to my car for 2 years now, and they've been great. I have them set just a little lower than standard, so the handling is great and so is the ride.

When the dampers get worn out I'll go for the KW V1 Inox coilovers next. Purely because they love using insane amounts of salt on the roads here in the UK, so the Weitec's are already corroded. I don't know what the roads are like over in Iceland, but I guess you're more worried about ash anyway!

Don't think you should worry too much about the front splitter, a few members in the past have said that the front had grounded less after fitting coilovers

I have the same problem. The car has gone 83.000km now and I think my front shocks are almost gone :( that's one of the reason I'm checking coilovers.

okay thanks for your opinion, I'll check Weitec before I commit me to VMAXX.

Okay, I want the coilovers to go low. I'll keep you in mind if I don't buy the VMAXX ;)

They also use A LOT of salt here in Iceland and the roads are not so good.. haha ash is long gone my friend ;)

Okay that sounds reasonable because the front shocks in the coilover set are probably much more stiff than the original shocks.

These are what you want mate,

Stainless and adjustable.

Grounded less? :smirk:

I've got weitecs and there pretty good, went silly low at 1st and it drove like a bag of spanners!(rubbish!)

It's now raised a bit and is so much better, although I'm on my 2nd splitter! Which catches on a regular basis if your not careful :giggle:

The best hight for the Weitecs is around std vRS hight. Ive had mine at 4 different hights and the lowest was nice look but as Si said very harsh. Raised it up for the WSM drive in 2009 and it was better, then went up just bellow std hight when I moved to Cardiff and it was the best it had ever been and the handling was much improved.

With the adj KW set I think you can go lower and keep it a nice ride due to the adjustable nature but we shall see. good thing about them tho is they shouldnt rust.

I think they ment it grounded less going down the speed bump rather then up. That's more of the problem with mine, goes over it ok but grounded when going down

I catch it both ways :giggle:

I catch it both ways :giggle:

haha damn.. I have caught the speed bump so many times with my front lip but that's probably only because of the front shocks that just bounce the car lol

But guys one more question,

F found these pro sport coilovers which are pretty cheap:

My link

What do you think about them, comparable to the VMAXX or Weitec? Any experience?
