Felicia brake servo

Featured Replies

are the 1.3 and 1.6 brake servos the same?

im having problems with my brakes(pedal goes straight to the floor) and i think the servo may be the cause, as when i press the pedal it sometimes makes the revs increase and when the pedal nears the floor something makes a popping noise.

Anyone got some ideas?

there are 2 different types of servo, abs and non-abs... ie all the non-abs cars/pickup have the same one petrol and diesel...

you sure it's not your master cylinder that's broken? also check to make sure the little non-return valve to the servo hasn't split or popped off.

Thanks

Already checked that for splits and it seems ok.

Not sure about the master cylinder, it could well be, are the master cylinders the same or does the same apply as above?

yes the same applies to the master cylinder too.. on the non-abs ones the master cylinder mounting bolts are horizontal, and the abs one they are vertical... however it is possible to retro fit an abs servo and master cylinder into a non-abs vehicle but the brake pedal is much firmer and you need to bend the brake pipes a touch to get them to fit

ok i changed the brake servo and the master cylinder and the pedal still goes straight to the floor, could the problem be anything else?

i have done the rear disc conversion btw but the calipers seem fine...

you've got air in the system then... borrow yourself a proper pressure bleeder and purge both brake circuits fully.

does the car have abs?

edit: did you set up the length of the clevis on the brake servo pushrod when you fitted the new servo?

Well we have bled all the brakes a few times now, using easy bleed on the tyre pressure.

Nope it doesnt have ABS.

Yeah we did adjust it was 50 or 55mm....

Stumped for ideas now, spose we could bleed the system again

The cylinders in the calipers arnt much bigger than those n the drums are they? causing the complete lack of pressure?

no the 38mm piston in the caliper equates to same effective size of the 19mm rear wheel cylinder (cylinder pushes out both sides at same time)

okie dokie looks like bleeding the system thoroughly.

Do you think having the calipers on the oppostie side which they supposed to be on could have anything to do with it?

Saying that we did swap the bleed and brake hose over so everthing was the correct way up and that didnt work either....

although it's very messy, the one trick you could try is to bleed the rears by slackening off the fluid union at the caliper rather than using the bleed nipple.. the calipers are notoriously difficult to bleed if they are upside down

Ok might give that a go

Right, i took the car to a mechanic today and he bled the system again but still nothing, but then he rang his mate who works with vw/skoda etc and he said that the master cylinder isnt big enough to work with the rear calipers and to try to confirm this he blanked off the rear brakes and then the brakes worked fine, so it must be that.

Has anyone actually got this setup and working?

Or do i have the wrong calipers or somat? (i had the rear stub axles, carriers and calipers from a 1994 mk3 golf 2.0 8v)

i'm sure that rolo on here has that setup on his pickup

Think im gna go back to drums now, but keep the disc setup incase i can work someting out.

The mechanic reckons that i could fit the master cylinder and servo from a golf gti, you think this would work?

no the golf servo has a different fitting on the pushrod... the servo is irrelevant anyhow

Well tbf he did say to swap the pushrod over aswell as the servo and master cylinder because of extra travel or something.

Could that work?

Or if not what else could be done you reckon?

You could try either an ABS Felicia master cylinder or one off an Audi - the part number is 4A0611021D - both are bigger than the standard non-ABS felicia MC. The audi one is 23.8mm, think the Felicia ABS one is too. It's not a straight swap though - both have only two outlets.

What size is the none abs felicia master cylinder?

possibly but that's untested waters you are entering there, there are other options you can explore like pressure regulator valves before deciding the rip it all off and start scratch

Don't give up Nugget, i have no idea what all this stuff invovles but after all ur hardwork i would hate to see drums on back on your car again

Im gonna have to go back to drums for now, as i need to use the car!

But i aint gonna give up, im going to look into the Felicia ABS master cylinder and the 25mm Audi one.

Gonna try and find out what size master cylinder the mondeo and the golf gti use too see if there similar sizes.

Couple of questions-

A master cylinder with only 2 outlets, how do you link up 4 pipes? some sort of splitter?

With the felicia ABS master cylinder, would i have to swap the servo and pushrod too? or just the master cylinder?

When you tried the Audi one down the scrap yard Tom will it work with the felicia servo and push rod?

Ok im going to scrap the ABS servo idea i think it will be too small still

I did a lil researching and im lead to believe that the golf gti master cylinder is 24mm and the ford mondeo is 25.somethingmm so if the 25mm audi one will work with the felicia servo and what not it sounds like it should be suitable.

The 25mm Audi M/C that Tom mentioned is both cripplingly expensive and rare as rocking horse droppings. Th 23.8 mm one is a bit easier to come by (I found mine on ebay). The non-ABS MC is 22mm, IIRC.

Plumbing a two-outlet MC just requires a bit of extra pipework - I used a T-piece and made up a small length of copper brake pipe to connect it to the MC outlets.

Ok thanks for that.

Does that 23.8mm master cylinder power the rear calipers well enough then or?
