Mystery temporary power loss on octy vRS

Featured Replies

My octy vRS was as flat as a pancake this morning for no apparent reason. It has been running superbly and then this morning there just seemed to be no power at all, as if the turbo wasn't working. I did a throttle body reset on way to work and it seems fine now. Has any body had this happen before ?

That reply from Jabba is worth having in our Article section for future reference. All we need is the question to introduce it.

here is my email to Jabba

I had my Octavia remapped on Jan 12th and since then have notice a curious

problem with the car. In the weeks immediately after having the car remapped

I thought on a number of occasions that it had lost its new power, however,

a number of people convinced my that I had just got used to it.

Recently I have been more conscious of a loss in power to the extent that I

have been trying to replicate the problem. It seems that I have a loss of

power when I do the following:

1)Drive round town for 3-4 miles below 2500rpm from a cold start.

2)Continue onto an A road at a steady 50-60mph for a few minutes

3)Slow down to 30mph and below again

Now, having driven like this, I accelerate hard in second/third and there is

no turbo whistle and the Bailey makes the same noise it would just pottering

around in first. The car feels like the turbo is doing nothing, there is no

kick/whistle and it accelerates slower than it did as standard.

The way to solve the problem is to stop, turn off the engine/ignition then

restart. The car then returns to its usual bonkers, full boost, torque steer

behaviour

I have run the car on nothing but BT Ultimate for which it was remapped and

there seems to be no connection between fuel levels and the problem.

understand that bit. the question would presumably need to be raised as a new thread with the jabba response given as a posting ????

 ...I think what Denis wanted was a short question to which he could point Jabba's reply in the FAQ section.

Something like...."intermittent drop in power".

:D

We need a simple statement of problem and solution to form an Article for future reference for members. The question could be: Why does my 1.8T sometimes suffer engine power loss for no apparent reason, but then revert to normal when the ignition is switched off then back on again? The answer is Jabba's reply to Goochie. I will write the Article now...

I've now written an article - see if you can find it! I will add a note about the boost pipe problem under the engine which produces similarish symptoms plus a multitude of error codes.

Try here then work your way backwards out of that section of Briskoda to see how to get in. :)

This error code can be caused by any loss of pressure.. DV sticking, a pipe losing a touch of boost... I had the 17705 for nearly years before resolving it, including cleaned and new throttle bodies that did not solve.. just be aware a dirty TB is not the only possible cause...

its just happened again on the way home from the football. slow traffic out of ground and surrounding roads and cold also. after about 2-3 miles on to open road and distinct lack of boost/power. pulled over after another five minutes, turned off engine and re-started it.........back to its usual full on BMW eating self. ah the wonders of modern technology :(

Nice article, Denis, thanks for that. That helps explain what I occasionally suffered from for the past six months.

As it's a known problem, Skoda NL isn't too fussy about it - my dealer replaced both throttle body (with a bigger one) and boost pipe under warranty and the problem vanished. It's a sort-of-a-recall-except-that-it-isn't kind of thing where they upon request or complaint from the customer will replace the faulty stuff without asking.

Nice FAQ  , just wondering if it would be a good idea to mention the sticking DV at the end also which can also cause the same problem when cold, it might save someone changing the Pipe when the DV is to blame (which is what happened me, but it was under warranty). [/quote']I've added a note about the DV although, as Ian said earlier, the 17705 error code can be triggered by any loss of pressure and can be very problematic to diagnose. But cleaning the throttle body and checking a DV are good starting points for the DIYers - and the OEM version of latter is relatively cheap to replace for fault-finding purposes.

Had experience of Octavias struggling before with no faults showing up, most times a replacement air mass meter sorts it out, they used to be over
