Whatever else?

Not interested in any annual subscription nonsense, just a good intutive to use sat nav.

Dont need Bluetooth either.

Personally I'd go for the TomTom...

Had TomTom, Garmin and Navigon in the past and prefer the TomTom out of the 3 as the routing seems the most sensible. Having said that, all 3 get you where you want to go...

Right, 1/2 way there ( & I was inclined to "plump" for a Tomtom anyways)

So which b.........g model of a Tomtom?

Go for the cheapest with lrge screen and maps for the countries you want. Small screen is fiddly and annoying :(

Ok

I am getting warm (I think)

either

(i)the XXL IQ routes Europe @ £170.00, 42 countries 5" screen...............but only 2 GB flash and I have seen comments that existing maps get dumped when one loads "map zones"

or

(ii)

Start 25 Europe, 5" screen ..... again nominally £170.00..............4GB Flash..................but no Croatia (bugger!)

wtf do Tomtom make 2 such apparently almost identical devices.

Or what have I missed?

Avoid Navman like the plague is all i would say.

Ebuyer UK used to do an own brand type Satnav for about £60 that could be loaded with the TomTom software with a bit of know how - dont know if thats still the case?

Bigjakk,

I instantantly, without any analysis whatsoever, decided NOT to purchase the Navman, simply because the sales type at Halfords was pushing it so hard.

I kinda worked out that it must be an "own brand/sole distributership" type arrangment.

Since I HAD specifically asked about the Tomtom.

Which might as well not of been on display at all.

Mind you in the same vein when 20 year ago I was attempting to buy a diesel estate ( with a list of very rational reasons for this car type)

the car salesmen were overfond of saying...."nah.......what you really need is a XYZ= i.e. whatever they had to sell, generally being sommat small & petrol.

Scheesh!

PS

Prolfe,

A very useful recommodation that totalPDa site.

still "swithering"

I bought a Navman F10 (which is admittedly the lowest of their range) a couple of years ago, purely for use at work and because it was only £50.

When it arrived, i discovered the maps dated back to the year 2005 (theyre always about 12months old anyways, but 4 years :o).

Map updates arent readily availiable, without paying £40 for a CD every year - ridiculous. Also the navigation leaves a lot to be desired when you get out into rural area's, on more than one occassion it has led me down a broken dirt track which has wound up at a dead end.

Interface etc is nice enough and easy to use, but at the end of the day, the maps and navigation are poor so what is the point.

We've had two or three of Ebuyer's own models, with a little bit of IT know how a recent edition of TomTom can be loaded onto them - and for the money they are great. We no longer have any of them as SWMBO's Clio has integrated TomTom.

The only major difference between her official TomTom version and the old unofficial one seems to be the live traffic jam updates and automatic route recalculation that she gets, which is pretty good.

I've also heard good things about iGO navigation software, but you would need to source a device to run it on separatley.

Recently i've been simply using Google Navigation on my Smart Phone, its not really a fully featured Satnav (no speed camera alerts, speed limit advisories, POI's etc) but in terms of simply providing directions its spot on - for free!

Cheers
