Red oil light randomly comes on

Featured Replies

Local independent garage brushed off this problem while getting the MOT done. They said there's nothing much they can do if it just happened the one time. Luck would have it that it came on again twice after the MOT. It just had its 60k service, so new oil, filter etc. Oil levels are within range.

If there's a problem with the oil pressure, why does the warning light turn off randomly? Wouldn't it consistently be under low pressure?

What else can I check? Or shall I find somewhere for a second opinion?

I'd hazard a guess at it being a sensor playing funny beggars, A scan would confirm!

Probably the oil pressure switch, but as my crystal ball is currently broken, model and engine type would help.

Most likely to be the oil pressure switch, my advice would be change the switch and have an oil pressure test done while the old switch is out (oil pressure gauge screws into switch location.)

The giveaway that the oil pressure switch is gone will be the presence of oil in the electrical connector.

But according to the Haynes manual for my engine code, there is no oil pressure switch...the 1.2 and the 1.4 DOHC have them, but not the 1.4 OHV....

Am I barking up the wrong tree?

How does the oil light work then if there's no switch?

Which tree?

Well, under the section for 1.2 and 1.4 DOHC, there are instructions for removing the switch, (2a.15 and 2c.17), but nothing in section 2b for the 1.4 OHV which lists my engine's code (AQW)....

It's on the right hand (as you look at the car from the front) side of the cylinder block at the front close to the oil filter. Unplug the wire, unscrew the switch and replace it. I think that it's the same part as the 1.4 16 valve, so you'll have a picture in your manual as to what to look for.

The manual talks about removing the air filter first to access the oil switch...but if its next to the oil filter, i can get it while leaving the air filter alone..........which one is it?

Many thanks.

There's lots of inaccuracies in the Haynes manual. Definitely don't take all it says as gospel.

It's very easy to access, it's as described above - front of the block on the right hand side (passenger). Easy to get at without removing anything. It's not the one directly next to the oil filter, but that would become obvious once you have a replacement as that fixes differently.

Oh crap...I thought they were the bible for the DIY mechanic....

I was hoping to take it out, give it a clean, pop it back in and see if that sorts it temporarily... Few garages I called said they'd have to drain the oil....which seems a waste given that I only just had it serviced and changed.

Is this the sensor I need for the AQW?

Was hoping it would be this part instead...for the sake of the wallet...

Most likely the last one. Oil pressure sensors don't cost much usually. Even at a dealer's I'd hope you'd have change from a tenner :)

That's what I'd hope too...but the engine types listed on the second doesn't have AQW...whereas the first one does. Unless of course, it's not gospel either...

You guys on this forum are absolutely legendary! I can't thank you all enough :D

One garage quoted £70 to do everything since I would 'need an oil change too'.....laughable.
