Removal of factory sat nav '04 octavia. Help!

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I'm hoping someone will be able to help with my issue?

I have recently bought a 2004 Octavia vRS which has factory istalled sat nav (mfd). The issue is that the sat nav does not recognise where I am and is currently puting me in Ireland?? I have tried to sort out the problem through the settings with no joy. My next step is to check the connections at the rear of the head unit. The problem with this is that it appears to be quite difficult without forcing anything.

Do I need to remove the whole centre dash unit as one piece or can I remove the mfd on it's own?

I've gone as far as taking the glove box out to try and get better access but still can't manage to get it out?

Anyone with any idea's?

Many thanks.

You need to remove the trim from around the radio, basically you open the ashtray and grasp the bottom of the plastic trim and pull it off towards you. From what I remember of my MK1 vRS it should come off relatively easily.

I would hazard a guess and say that the GPS receiver maybe faulty, not sure where its located on the MK1 octy though. Not that many were sold with satnav.

Thanks mannyo.... I'll try it now. I've taken off the facia trim around the unit and there are screws but it would appear that the wole unit is blended in to the dash. With standard radios, there are 'key' slots but can't see any on the mfd unit. I've got the climatronic unit out of the way to assist too but still seams well rooted.

I believe the gps antenna is located with the normal radio aerial as it is different to others which don't have sat nav.

My plan is to check the connections at the rear of the head unit first then work back to the antenna.

There must be a connection somewhere as it shows that there are a number of satalites available but none connected???

Thanks again for your reply.

I am not sure how the MFD was held in place,

I have found a retrofit guide.

http://www.octavia-v...d-install-guide

but not one on how to take it out.

Looking at one of the picture it looks like you need these.

http://www.amazon.co...S/dp/B003R8XLU8

There is most likely 4 thin slots on the edge of the units bezel to accept these, not part of the facia but actually around the outer casing.

Thanks again for the reply. Saw the guides somewhere on another topic when searching for help.

The holes I can see which may be something to do with releasing the unit are very small and not like the ones on the normal radio head unit - (it's also posible to use feeler gauges to do the same job but these won't fit the MFD.

I think it's going to be a case of trial and error. The only issue with taking the whole front console off is that it involves removal of the steering wheel and allsorts!!!!

I'll have a look at the GPS receiver first I think :-)

I'll post how I got to it if I ever do! ha ha!

Thanks again for your help.

Does this help;

Thanks all for you help with this.

I've finally managed to get the head unit out. It is possible to do this by only removing the clip on facia panel.

I've learned the hard way by removing virtually every panel and the centre console to get at the head unit! Oh well, at least I give it all a good clean.

Ok, For future reference (photo's to follow) there are four springy bits of metal holding the head unit in place. They are on the sides as opposed to being top and bottom. There are located behind the left scroll arrow (top left), behind just under the number 3(bottom left), behind the day/night (top right) and behind just below the number 6 (bottom right).

I've checked all connections and they are all fine.

I've also checked the antenna itself on the roof and the connections/wires underneath it (behind the headlining) - they also all appear fine.

I am begging to believe that this is some sort of software problem.

The problem is that the vehicle's position is show as being in the middle of the irish sea (well just off the coast of Dublin). This is where the SAT NAV system has shown the vehicle since I bought it. (I've travelled about 200miles so it's been in plenty of different places.)

I have tried to manually input the location as this appear to be an option but when I do try to do this it says that it "cannot input position here".

I've checked the CD-ROM and this is fine - all files present and correct. Allthough it is a 2004/2005 edition. Yes it's Uk and Ireland.

I've also checked the GPS info on screen and it shows that there are 31 satalites available but 0 received and current location can not be determined?

Any ideas anyone?

Is there anyway of a reset or something to kick the gps back into receiving a signal?

Harve4544 - that's very good of you, how much would you want for it if it does turn out to need a new one?

Wouldn't want anything for it, it's used but working.

I actually had to adjust the position of my GPS antenna today as I was only picking up 2 satellites, as I moved the antenna into a good position the display updated the number of satellites automatically.

Harve4544 - PM sent thank you very much.

Ok.... the plot thickens.....

I've relooked at the rear of the head unit and the connection at the top right corner (as looking at the back) which I thought was the GPS connection has "amp" stamped on it? Maybe it isn't the GPS connection?

Also I have found a connection which looks like a GPS connection on the rear of the head unit approximately an inch in from the FM antenna connection - guess what, there is no lead comming from it

Pic is not the best but....

Ok probs with putting up images..... this just get better! :wonder:

Anyway anyone with any idea if this needs a connection or not?

Is your unit a genuine VW/Seat Skoda MFD1 or one of the chinese copies?

the back should look like this

Hi goonybird.

Yep it's a genuine factory fitted unit. Yep thats how the back looks and yep that's where I have a lead going to (top right).

Excellent post matey, I tried to put some pics up but the server kept dropping out - think will try again when not so busy.

Well that answers the question about making sure I've got all the correct connections....

Still none the wiser as to the problem?? I've managed to manually input locations now but the GSP still will not receive signals and locate where I am on the map???

harve4544 is sending me a GPS antenna so I can rule my antenna out - Thanks again mate

I might pop to skoda dealership tomorrow to see if they can shed any light on the matter through a free chat - if there is such a thing anymore :D

Thanks again all - keep the info coming

I just saw this post. I fitted a Skoda SAT nav to mine few years back and i had similar problem when first fitting mine. Turned out to be a faulty GPS antenna. I fitted new one to the rear of the glove box(metal bracket) where I fitted it before and where instruction show to fit. The minute I turned on unit it started searching for satellites and found very quickly. So it defo sorted my problem. I also got hold of a 2008/2009 Maps if you need a copy.

I still use the sat nav often although a little dated by todays standard has not let me down since.

Also you can get spare install / removal keys from Dealer or on line if needed i can post links.

At one point dealers were giving away them and free install guides

Any help needed just shout..

Hi Bowders1,

Thanks for the post. Thats good news about it may just be a gps antenna and thanks to harve4544 I'll be able to fix it or rule out the antenna as the problem.

Will update this thread with the fix.

Harve4544 - I owe you a pint or two! :thumbup::rofl:

Received the antenna today, plugged it in and hey presto it received 2 sats! Then..... the battery was dead so it turned itself off! it must have drained with me having the doors open when striping the centre console etc.

Battery on charge but I think there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Will update tomoz when it's all back together and fully working. I hope!

Just replaced my VW MFD with The Skoda MFD DX.

Problems testing both with picking up satellites. I have had this before, and it is the plug not fully home, it does seem very sensitive on these units. Working fine now. and colors suit better as now OEM green skoda splash screen.

Don't know what I am doing with the existing VW MFD as the leds were changed to bright green! Might keep it as spare?

Yep I have the genuine Skoda green model that gets the skoda logo appearing on ignition key turning on.

I think that although these units are a little dated suit the centre consule double din area very well, and light up nicely.

Job done!! :thumbup::)

Battery charged and the sat nav is now picking up 8 sats and locates where I am

All centre consoles and trim etc all put back with no screws remaining (normally end up with a couple and wondering where the hell they came from!) :D

Many thanks to all who offered help and big thanks to harve4544 for the gps antenna

Will be giving my car a good wash, clay bar, polish full treatment - then might even manage to post some pics if I can work out how to get pics on here.

Nice one mate, glad to hear it worked  wifes happy too, one less bit hanging around the house :giggle:
