laptop 2.5hdd in desktop pc

Featured Replies

Does anyone know about running a laptop hdd in a desktop?

I bought the IDE adapter and plugged everything in as it shud be but my pc will not detect the laptop drive at all, as if it's not connected.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated as my patience is rapidly running out.

is this a SATA or an EIDE drive, SATA is easy to get working whist on the other hand EIDE less so.

Getting power to the drive is the biggest issue with EIDE as SATA uses standard connections whereas EIDE may need a s custom power adapter.

Done it many times without a problem.

You need an adapter like this http://www.datapro.net/photos/laptop-ide-hard-drive-adaptor.html

You need to be careful that you get everything the right way round, as they are not normally keyed. Make sure the IDE channel you want to use is enabled in the BIOS - try going into Hard Disk Setup and setting the channel to auto and do a detect.

Is the drive spinning? - you should be able to feel it.

Personally I've never bothered trying to connect 2.5" drives internally.

I've always just used caddies like this one - They are cheap enough

Thanks for the suggestions. Solved my problem by using an old laptop. Installed windows 2000 and swapped drive back to tablet but windows won't boot. Tried linux debian instead and that works. Now I've just got to figure out how to use debian
