Vaccum box problems and the cure on my VRS

Featured Replies

Chaps i thought id post this as it may help someone should they have this problem and could be of useful advice to them.

Car is a Fabia VRS 2003 60k on clock engine code ASZ

Symptoms were that my engine would intermittently die as i was driving it and after about 2 seconds return to normal. Sometimes if it was idling it would just cut out. No engine management light was ever on.

Read the fault codes and i got the following:

19561 Motor intake Manifold Flap - N293 Open Circuit / Short with ground P3105 Intermittent

Now as this flap is part of the EGR valve and isn't electrically connected to anything on the engine management side i started to suspect the vacuum box was at fault. If you was wondering what the flap does it shuts for 3 seconds when you switch the engine off and this in effect suffocates the engine to stop it running on which can be a problem for diesel engines. I suspected mine was momentarily closing during driving due to the short hence the engine dies. The flap is closed using vacuum from the black vacuum box so to check this i disconnected the pipe and cleared the engine fault codes. I drove around for a few days like this and engine never missed a beat. Checked the codes again and the same fault code was present.

Also i noticed that the EGR and flap were very blocked up with carbon deposits that once i removed and cleaned greatly reduced the smoking of the engine (it is mapped so there's always some smoke)

£150 lighter and a new black box and all is now well. And just because im nosy i decided to attack the old box with my air saw and if you look closely at the photo of the insides you can see a blue stain that i think could be the electrical short circuit on the common earth car that the solenoids connect to!!!!!

Photos are the inside of the vacuum box and the same box before. Also the EGR valve complete that i took off showing the black diaphragm that closes the flap.
