DIY SERVICE DONE

Anyway you will never get all the oil out by suction as the thicker sludge will stick to the bottom (and all pumps have a minimum "puddle/immersion depth")......where it needs to drain out!!!

What sludge? There should be no sludge or crap or bits of anything in the sump. If there is then you haven't been changing the oil anywhere near the stated intervals or your engine is falling to pieces. If you have thick sludge at the bottom of your sump then you have serious problems.

I've used a pela pump and it does get all the oil out. First time I used the pump I dropped the sump plug out afterwards to check, no more oil came out. it doesn't have a minimum depth or anything like that. It goes straight down the dipstick tube to the very bottom of the sump.

As oil filters are accessed from the top (most of them) then you can also use the pump to empty the oil filter housing. That doesnt fully empty when just dropping the sump plug.

The pump removes around 4.3/4.4 liters from my Octavia. I'll be using it for a long time to come on my cars. One of the best tools I have bought.

Does anyone have any pics of where the pollen filter is located on 1.4 tdi and how to change the diesel filter . about to service my mams 07 fabia and to be honest havn't looked under the bonnet yet. i want to change the above ^^ and also the oil and oil/air filters . any recomendations of oil? what will i need to remove the sump plug and is it worth getting some new retainers for the sump / inspection cover.

any help will be much appreciated. also pattern or dealer filters? john

Hi John I've only just done mine in the summer and it's a breeze, pollen filter is underneath the glovebox passenger side remove the rubber matting then you'll see the case holding the pollen filter it's here somewhere, the fuel filter is a doddle to remove just to clips and it's put, when re- attaching the car will splutter a bit but fuel will quickly get it going, the oil filter is bang in the middle right at the top underneath engine cover of you've got one, counterclockwise to open if you've not got a torx wrench just mark it with white point at the beginning and removal point then you'll get a firm seal, I've replaced the air filter with a K&N panel filter and there you go, make sure you use the best oil possible I used the castrol 5w x 40 edge warm oil up and leave for a while so oil settles then vacuum oil out brill, car will run like a Swiss watch

Agree with gizmo68, as a time served mechanic it is proper to drain out from sump plug having previously warmed the engine so all the 'foreign bodies' etc get flushed away. Some sump plugs ( not sure about Skoda) are magnetic and you just wipe off any iron filings before refitting sump plug WITH a new copper washer. Also gizmo is right - you get to check the underside of your motor's oily bits when you've taken off the underneath protector covers. Regular oil & filter changes are the cheapest way to ensure long and reliable engine life!

I will do the service on my fabias, however Mot to dealer and if he fines anything it will get fixed, absolutely the way to go to save money do it yourself oil and filter change but I wouldn't try anything more complicated e.g brakes as I wouldn't now where to begin , but I've got a lot of holidays still left to take so who knows I may give it a go

??

It was just an appropriate picture I found.

Implying that by using the vacuum pump you are missing the opportunity to check other maintenance items which will cause you issues in the future.

Is it as easy to reset the service indicator on the dash as it is on the Mk1 ? Combination of ignition and trip button ?

Do you have to bleed through the diesel after changing a fuel filter ? Sorry I used to fix tractors....probably a moot point on a modern diesel.

No need to bleed diesel after filter change the pump will do it all 4 u it may splutter a little but soon turn over
