Can anybody tell me how to get rid of the poxy engine light.

Although this has been covered a million times: asz can be mapped out... blt cannot

Also would I be right in thinking there aren't any bulbs on the dash? They're surface mounted leds, which would need to be completely masked or de-soldered

Time for the bit of insulation tape over the instrument LED then :D

An electronically controlled EGR system such as that fitted to your diesel Fabia reduces fuel consumption and NOx emissions while in lean cruise, it can also help reduce pumping losses and combustion chamber and exhaust gas temperatures where appropriate. It DOES NOT affect full throttle performance so I don't understand why you would want to disable it.

On a petrol engine I'd agree with you about the fuel consumption, particularly on the overrun. However, I struggle to see the advantage (barring emissions) on a diesel, where the fuel/air mixture can be varied enormously by comparison and best combustion likes fresh, clean air. I believe a lot more EGR is done on modern diesels in an effort to reduce NOX than is healthy(?!?) for fuel consumption.

I feel the EGR valve body does impact on performance. Not that it's an EGR, but how it's implemented on the VAG 1.9 TDI with the anti-shudder valve. It's a big reduction in cross section with a plunger in the middle of it, just before the air pops down the manifold into the cylinder head. It promotes stagnant and turbulent air and crud buildup.

EDIT: OK, maybe not so great a reduction when it's clean - LOL. However, when "gunked up"...

Dont know if it's much help to anyone but when i used to have my Ibiza Cupra we used to take off all sorts of bull**** emissions rubbish and put resistors in the now redundant plugs. That would trick the ECU into thinking everything was still connected and so never threw up an engine light. Guessing someone who's a bit clever with the magic that is electronics has probably already tried it and found it doesnt work?

c'mon somebody... comfirm that Andy is right.. please

AFAIK the throttle body/anti shudder valve on the BLT engine, has a position potentiometer coupled to the drive motor for the flap, so no, fixed resistors would not cure the EML with an EGR delete. MOT fail aside, you would need an EGR delete that allowed the throttle body to be fitted as per OEM fitting. Then a map that removes the ECU limitation on mg/stroke MAF ratio.

Remember EGR reduces combustion temps at steady cruise and the first 2 minutes of every idle session. EGR delete will raise EGT = bad for turbo. If all you want to avoid is gummed up EGR and inlet manifold, oil catch can and elephant hose mod FTW. You still get some soot build up inside the EGR and manifold, but it's dry, and doesn't get that thick when the oil vapor from the engine is eliminated.
