12 Volt Socket

Featured Replies

As title says, is there a way for the 12 Volt Socket to be disabled while the ignition is switched off?

I'm guessing it probably can't but worth the ask eh.

Not sure, as I haven't tested this theory yet but, it might turn off after a while like the interior lights.

Well I know it stays on as long as there's charge in the battery, just deleted 15 hours of recording from my roadhawk while it sat in the dealers carpark :p

I'm wondering if perhaps it's controlled by the ECU in which case maybe there's a way to change it via vagcom.

Failing that hard wire a hidden switch under the seat or under the steering column

Yeah I'd considered that, although I wanna do it because I keep leaving things plugged in so chances are I'll forget the switch too!

Really annoying this, isn't it? I've got a TomTom that turns itself on and off when power is applied via the 12V socket.

I've never had a car that kept the 12V sockets live after the keys had been withdrawn and the doors locked.

Sounds a bit dangerous to me for all sorts of reasons - flat battery being the least of them.

Is there really no way to change this functionality somewhere in the car's firmware?

All VAG cars have the power socket always live and have done for at least 11 years. My Audi's is always live, and its 11 years old. My old Superb and Octy Mk1 and 2 were also always live. Since its wired direct to the battery via the fusebox the only way to switch it off is pull the fuse. I remember when Skoda offered a 12V fridge as an accessory and one member left it plugged in and returned to a flat battery.

Thats why it is called a 12v socket and not a cigarette lighter as these were ignition off

OK - thanks for the confirmation. Still think it's mad!

So, can anyone tell me where to break into a 12V line that IS switched? - Preferably near the dashboard to make a tidy way of hard-wiring a TomTom.

Wouldn't be the hardest job to rewire it to an ign/accessory feed.

It's possible too fit a new switched live fuse in the fusebox. You got at least one active minifuse socket free. Buy repair cable from skoda and wire the 12V socket to it. I think there are partnumbers and description somewhere in the forum.

the best way to do it is to piggyback (i don't know if it's the right terms... i speak spanish :p) the15amp fuse that protects the front wipers and make a brige on the 15 amp fuse of the 12V socket....

the front wipers are controlled by the ignition, so if the ingnition is off, no power to the wipers... tomorrow i will post a picture...

i'ts so damn hard to try to express myself on another language :p

LOL ! 1 MILLION % better than our Spanish.

Your grammer is better than some English.

took me a little longer to take the picture.

there's the contraption made for robbing power from the front wippers and drive it through the 12 volt socket

it's very safe and i've been using it for about 1 year now...

i use one of these, i leave my HD Dash camera and mini torch plugged in all the time. 3rd socket for satnav when its being used. individual switches are ideal and easy to use at night.

Looks like something used to launch nuclear missiles. :giggle:

Thanks celulari - that's a clever solution.

But don't you need wipers in Chile? :rain:

of course i need them!!! with this method the front wipers still working, i'm just simply taking voltage from that fuse and routing it to the 12 volt socket.... both things works, but only with the ingnition on...

first... solder a cable of the fuse holder to a fuse (15 amps for the front wipers)

second... break in half a fuse (doesn't matter what amps is that fuse) and solder the other cable to it.

put the whole fuse with the cable on the fuse socket of the front wipers, and then put the half fuse with the cable on the upper side of the socket for the 12 volt socket.

obviuslly put a fuse on the fuse holder...

so, that way you have both things running and protected... the wipers with the fuse with the cable soldered, and the 12 volt socket wit the fuse on the fuse holder...

i hope it's more clear now...

Actually it was already clear to me - now it's crystal.

Thanks again!
