Octy vRS + Snow + Ice

Featured Replies

yeah greg i live in central scotland too and the roads have been terrible. ive had a few scares in the car this week too, the snow has been quite wet and seems to have added to the problems!

Virtually no snow in my part of Central Scotland :thumbdwn:

obviously those haldex users amoungst us have an advantage' date=' but its just not the same as massive wheel spin and understeer is it !? i mean wheres the fun in AWD in the snow !?

:D Fun is watching the rear wheel drive boys in the snow :D[/quote']

I agree, understeer is no fun at all.... oversteer is where it's at :D

Well the only thing you need is some good winter tyres(look here http://www.briskoda.net/forums/t16630-.html for a test), never had any prob in the snow. I reckon it's kind of hard in the UK since the temperature fluctuates so much as to make the use of winter tyres a bit unnecessary.

It comes down to economy when I think about it. Here in Norway you have to by law have winter tyres on your car by the 15th of October until at least Easter time, meaning that you have to have two sets of tyres each year. Since the cars are so blooming expensive here people don

I would love winter tyres on the 5 or 6 days a year I'd actually need them ....

But seriously, I'm thinking about invest in some 15" steel wheels with skinnies for next year, should cost pennies plus I can take them on and off when I please.

For us poor peeps on two wheel drive, what is the general opinion of winter tyres (talking specifically about the UK). I couldnt find any tyre place with winter tyres in stock, and whilst one said he could order them (Michelin Alpin's), they were quite expensive at

Hi all

We have had snow & ice probs this week up in the hills above Halifax..

Glad to say no bumps or dents though...

  :( Want to ask re- Traction control , this is on by default isn't it? & only switched off when you press the little buuton on the dash?

It did not seem to be working on our vrs fabia this week ...but the warning light was illuminated during wheel spin.. I thought the spinning wheel should lock & the drive shift to the other wheel? this was not happening. when you press the ASR button the warning light is on all the time..Does this meen it's off or on.....Sorry to sound totally thick & stupid!!!!

Thanks for any advice..

charles & julie..

ASR attempts to reduce the engine power output so your front wheel(s) regain grip. Problem is that on very slippery surfaces (ice) it just won't be able to reduce it down that much, so you'll still get spin.

Solution - be more gentle on the accelerator in these conditions. You probably will still get wheelspin.

The warning light will come on during wheel spin. If you press the ASR button the light will be on permanently, and yes, that means it is turned OFF.

I'm getting ESP fitted on mine, which behaves a little different, but that's what ASR does :)

We had a lot of snow here on Thursday night and it had ice underneath. I got a little stuck coming up a slight slope to a mini roundabout. I had to pull away from stationary and both front wheels just spun up, the ASR light was on too. Tried 2-3 times, with low revs and could not pull away. So I tried with the ASR off and managed to get away - may have just been coincedental though

Well, I am at home again today after some sideways on the roundabout 1 mile from the house at 0715 this morning. And it's still snowing !

From what I understand, you should disable traction control in these kind of weather conditions as it wil stop the tryres biting. This was advice given by professional drivers.

Got ESP on our car and it's funny in the wet throwing it into a sharp bend, the brakes are applied and it pulls the whole car back into line.
