what is up with my computer!?

Featured Replies

got a system tune up which is ment to keep everythin ok, it does what it says it does and fixes problems, always defrag and disc clean up etc, virus scan shows up nothin but my comp sometimes runs slow or wont fully open websites or pages freeze. help needed please.

Sounds like there isn't enough ram or big enough pagefile.......what's the system spec??????

When you say sometimes runs slow, is there a pattern to when it happens, if you have a specifc application open, time of day etc, or does it appear to be happening randomly?

its only a home comp, i dont have anythin fancy on it at all, not even many pictures. all i use it for is browsin the web.no pattern to when it happens.some sites run ok, like i never have a problem on here, facebook is sometimes slow, my other half gos on babycare sites but they never work for her sometimes, it will only display half the page she is wanting to read. google sometimes works fine till i try and go back to do another search then it freezes and i have to open another page to continue.

When you say tune up, who did it and what did they use?

I hope you have turned off all the windows firewalls, antivirus stuff etc and unistalled any other antivirus and let AVG do it's firewalls etc!

Also some of these "tune up programmes when left to default settings are a bit carp for "tune-ups"......I use Ccleaner for getting rid of stuff and wiping the drives, deleting cookies and fixing registery conflicts.....then I use Defraggler to defrag the hard drives and pagefile........and Easeus for partitioning/converting/renaming drives etc....All legit freeware and very good....better than the stuff thats built into Win7 and hasn't caused me any problems.....so far.. :giggle:

Sorry mate but I'd leave windows firewall firmly on. Depending on what version of AVG he's running it might not even have a firewall built in, but I'd agree about CC cleaner.

ccleaner? can i download that and use it without getting shut of my avg?

I don't know if you're experiencing the same problem as me, everthing seems to run fine - programs, games etc, however web browsing (both IE and FF) have become slow to the point that seems as though the router is cutting out (Multiple page reloads before it pops up). Router and modem both checked and found to be ok.

Installed Chrome and the problem disappears! No Malware/virii found and no major changes to the system settings etc.

Starting to wonder if something more sinister is happening and my detection software hasn't been updated to see it (aka a TDL Botnet or similar).. :|

Anti-Virus doing network scanning can play havoc with network connections .

So ya suggest changing my browser?

Hi Mikejay,

I ran AVG and IE8 without problem until I ran Tune-Up. Websites would always open.....eventually.....but pages froze repeatedly. I uninstalled Tune-Up and the problem went away.

Some time later, I updated to IE9 and the problems returned - along with script errors when attempting to print pages from the web. I took Trilogy2k's advice to download Google Chrome, and all the problems have disappeared.

Great shout T2k - thank you

Rob

I use google chrome all the time no problems on my pc.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Both my hachine running Sophos Sweep, and my sis's running Bullguard get sluggish when the AV is updating. I'd check whether or not AVG updates coincide with the sluggishness.
