Help with boost leak

Featured Replies

Right yesterday i am 99% confident i have a boost leak somewhere. I don't drive the car much through the week but had it out for a drive yesterday afternoon and it sounds like i defenitley have a leak somewhere.

When you boot the car its very noisey and whooshy lol and quite flat i have started to notice that its quite loud now. I am running a standard paper filter and compbrake dv so i would expect a little extra noise from the dv but this is really loud when accelarateing hard in any gear it kind of sounds like when you have a cone crappy induction kit fitted to the maf that wooshy sucky noise lol.

This morning i had a good look over the 2 pipes under the manifold they same fine no splits, i also checked the pancake pipe the intercooler pipes and any other pipes i could see and reach. The only thing i noticed was one of the clips on the y breather pipe wasnt connected as tight as it could be i tightend that and took it for a drive and its still the same.

Anyone got any more ideas that i could check over the weekend? if i can't find anything i will just book it into the garage and get it serviced at the same time.

cheers

On the diesel there are a couple of extra connections/joints around the intercooler behind the offside headlight. Might be worth checking them too, as I assume the layout for pipework would be similar on the 1.8T.

The only other way to check other than visual and by hand is a smoke test mate

Thanks for the replys guys.

I had a shot of my mates golf mk4 turbo this afternoon and its very quiet so i know i defenetly have a problem. Bit of a daft question but on full power how loud are these engines? My mates golf was complety silent even with a 143k on the clock.

Hopefully my trusty mechanic will fix the leak while carrying out my service

Have you checked the pipe going to the dump valve? Mine pops off now n then from either side

checked the dv pipes they are fine, but i have noticed that the y breather clip that was loose has now caused damage to a pipe. The pipe that connects to the y breather at the manifold side now has a split rigt round it now :wonder: . Its like a plastic bend that then connects to the pipes under the manifold. The pipe i mean basically comes from the y breather to the pipes under the manifold. Its a weird plastic type of material dosn't feel very strong.

What does that pipe do? could this be causeing my issue? i have included a few photos to show where the split is.003.jpg

Any advice would be great. I am going to put a bit of insulateing tape around the split as a temp fix.

That's One of the breather pipes I mentioned to you 

Yeah mate, that jubilee clip was loose this morning so i tightened it up then checked it again and noticed it was split like that. I still think i have a leak elsewhere as when i tightened the clip and took it for a drive it was still loud.

How hard is it to replace that pipe? Looks fiddly lol

Does the pipe that comes from awsome etc fit into the breather system? Is this the pipe that i need to upgrade to?

I think that should give you an excuse to get rid of all that extra piping and fit a OCC  .

If not then the pics should help you see where the pipping you have goes. You can tidy that pipping up without fitting a OCC.

Then also remove your SAI, N249 and N112

creation motorsport and the silicone breather company on the bay both sell that pipe for much much less than awesome

edit: here ya go pal, look for item number 160619963662

paul i would use this time to do what bowders has said not expensive and will ensure nice clean inlet tracks and no more issues ;-)

Just a small update.

Had the car in for a service today and they carried out a smoke test no other leaks or splits etc which is good i suppose so i am hoping that its this breather pipe thats already split thats causeing this loud hissing noise and slight hesitation if not no idea what it could be dodgy n75 valve perhaps?

I think ill look to fit an oil catch can :) to replace all the crappy oem hoses.

help needed again!

I replaced the split pipe tonight after a lot of swearing and scrapped wrists and knuckles. I took the car out for a drive after i fitted it. It still seems loud when booting it, i am running a standard paper filter and a compbrake dv i don't expect it to be loud at all realy still think i have a bloody leak even though the garage said i didn't weird.

I noticed though the smaller pipe that comes up from the t piece section has now got a small split in it i must of broke it when getting the other pipe off  . Could that small split on the other pipe be causeing a loudish noise whilst on full throttle?

I know this is a bit of a stupid post as its hard to explain but just wondering if anyone who has had these split pipes experienced a louder noise on full throttle?

It just seems weird as the garage carried out a smoke test and never found any leaks apart from the original split.

cheers

I have a loud noise from my turbo and it sounds like the same problem your having/had. Did you find out what the cause was in the end?
