Turbo lag (V Roomster)

Featured Replies

just a quick question

maybe it's just me that's out of practice, but my 155bhp chipped 1.9td Roomster seems to suffer from terrible Turbo lag between gears, I can minimise it to a degree by shifting as quick as possible, but it's very hard to eliminate without perhaps developing the technique of keeping the gas pedal down during the shift.... then I suppose there's a lot more load on the (standard) clutch

Is this problem noticed on the Vrs Fabia models etc as I know the engine is 'roughly' similar, or is there any identifiable part used on the Fabia or mod which can be made to help get rid of some of the lag ?

any help would be ideal

cheers !

Paul

Has it done this since you've had it done?

Is it one of those tuning boxes, or is it a full remap?

it's a full re-map, yes, I've only started driving it hard since the re-map too, so I can't really remember if it had lag before it.

Who mapped it?

Does it do this across the entire rev range? What revs are you changing gear at?

'Awesome performance' remapped it, I have the graph from the dyno, and it all looks good and smooth.. which it is. I'm changing not far off the redline.... or a little back from it, but close

the lag is clearly just the bit where the turbo has stalled and has to get back spinning

from foot to the floor, dip the clutch for the minimum period, snick the gear in, clutch up and gas to the floor......then pause for half a second for a supreme lack of thrust, then off you go again. Granted it all works, just wondered if there's a way to avoid that pause ?

It might just be me that has a problem with turbo cars, I had a 330bhp Mitsubishi Evo and had some problems with that, but not always, and nothing like as bad

I'm aware that this is a Skoda and not an Evo by the way :) lmao

Try changing up at about 3.5k to 4k rpm, does the lag go away?

Try changing up at about 3.5k to 4k rpm, does the lag go away?

forgive my late response to this..... but no, if the car is pulling hard then there is lag between gears

I presume that this is perhaps normal since the car/engine/gearbox was not designed with this kind of driving in mind.... I just wondered if there was anything I could do to improve it.... I know it's the turbo stalling when the revs drop and having to spool up again when you're back on the gas, I figure the only way to imrove this is to improve the driver ?

Paul.

Mine isn't mapped yet, but I have noticed the throttle pedal gives a less than linear response, ie very little happens at the top of the pedal travel and a good prod is needed to get things moving. This may give the impression of lag perhaps.

Funnily enough my 1.4 TSi Yeti that I had earlier in the year had the throttle behave in a similar way.

Pedal foibles aside, I've not noticed the engine itself is laggy to a great extent, not a lot of pull below 1500 rpm, but if you're going higher in the rev range, that won't be a problem when changing up.

I have the same engine in my Seat and can't say I really notice a great deal of lag.

I mean yes it takes a second from pressing the throttle to feeling the turbo come in but that's only if the revs are just under 2000rpm. If the revs are on or over 2000rpm in mine it feels pretty much instant as the turbo is already spinning.

I never change as late as you though or at least very very rarely. I find a good pull up to 3000rpm will suffice in most situations and then the next gear brings the revs down close to where the engine has max torque so it pulls nice and strong again with only a little lag from getting the next gear and pressing on the throttle.

A note on the throttle too. I have also noticed that pressing very lightly on the throttle doesn't really cause the turbo to do much as you would expect and then there isn't much difference between pressing just a bit harder or flooring it... it still pulls hard. That's why I often end up spinning the wheels in the wet etc. I press the throttle about 1/3 way down... turbo comes one full pelt and the wheels spin slightly.
