The Great Funky J Sound System Install (part 2)

Featured Replies

Right onto the install.

We decided to lay the power down the left and audio down the right.

Problem no 1 - how to get power from inside the cabin to into the engine bay. No holes anywhere. I didn't fancy drilling a new one and grometting it. Bear in mind the power cable we used is 8 gauge!! In other words big thick stuff!!

I 1st took out glovebox to access the front of the cabin - mind the light as you take it out. (See pic)

Then I called Jon (Service Manager) At Forward Motors. He pointed out the solution. There is a grommeted hole which sits under the scuttle panel, which is located under the windscreen to the right. Covering it is a plastic housing, which is fun to get under. The hole sits slightly to the left of the pollen filter housing.

Get a flat blade and push it through gently. This then allows access to push the cable through from above the glovebox housing into the engine bay. Next put in in-line fuse and leave to connect to battery.

Next was laying the audio cable down the right. There is a big channel running under the carpet but watch the metal v clips that hold on the trim because they go "ping" easily. Also take care when pulling the trim away from the seat belt housing. This is easy to put back later if you treat it with respect!

We then ran the cabling for the sub and the power and changer cable into the boot for later termination and speaker wire to the amp.

Next was head unit. Getting the symphony out is fun. You need proper radio removal tools, which fit into the two flat slots on either side of the unit. You push them both home together, which frees the clips holding the unit onto the sides.

Next install Kenwood head unit. This was fun as the symphony is quite shallow. So we had to take a junior blade and cut part of the plastic moulding at the back out to get the depth needed for the Head unit.

Once done the cage slide in perfectly and we pulled the cables through. For the really technical details on wiring configs go to www.talkaudio.co.uk and consult my mate rich (known on the site as "richy boy". He and Al know their cookies I can tell you!!

More to come in part 3.................................

more pics!:D

Told you it came in on the right through the grommet

Door handle??? :D

My exhausts sounds nicer than your ice :p

More pics please, and where's Part 3.

You should have tried the trick I suggested for removing the old headunit, worked like a charm.

I assume that the plastic you cut at the back of the mounting hole was the piece that runs across about 1/2 way down, and not the bigger bit running behind as thats the ducting to the centre air vents.

Yep Manny that was the plastic bit that was in the way. Part three (the sequal) is coming soon.

Oh John, your exhaust does sound great (I heard it remember!!) but my system is LOUD, DEEP AND ROCKS dude!! You wouldn't have a hope of hearing your exhaust over it!!

PS How do you download more than one picy at a time. It's the first time i've done this sort of thing with me new camera!!

Mr funky its one pic per post I am afraid. Or you need to upload them somewhere and link to them.

Funky! Need some help, please! >

I'm going through the exact same thing as you've already done, so any more info as where I can find this location for pulling the power cable (4 AWG, so even thicker) through to the battery? What's a scuttle panel? Is this still on the passenger side? Any pictures of where it comes into the engine compartment?

Q.

Q

i ran 4 gauge cable through my car... gave up on the bulkhead and drilled my own hole under the passenger footwell then siliconed it up afterwards... if id done it up front would have sames 90mins of messing.

Did you have the car up on jacks to get underneath?

Scuttle panel is the bit of black plastic between the back of the bonnet and the front of the windscreen.

I'm not sure from the descriptions of left and right which way funkyj was facing when he wrote this,

but I'd imagine there's enough info in the description to help you find it once the scuttle panel's off... :)

yes up on axel stands....

Hmm, might be worth investing in 2... From experience the jack that comes with the car is only really good for changing a tyre... Halfords my best bet?

Rob, thanks. Why don't they use 'normal' names for things like that, like 'window screen bonnet protection strip thingie' ;)
