Too Popular?

Featured Replies

I've been driving my brilliant Yeti for nearly 14 months now (without any problems, one service and a set of 4 tyres at 20k miles)

Over this period I've been steadily clocking up my Yeti spotting tally, waving and getting a number of waves back and typically seeing one or two on every long journey if I was lucky. I've even got a look alike just up the road (the driver does wave every time we see each other).

However, its now getting to a point where I'm spotting Yeti's everywhere and people have stopped waving :-(

As an example,

Monday - Oxford to Portsmoth to Hook and back - 3 Yeti's spotted

Tuesday - Oxford to Hook and back - 4 Yetis on the road and a lorry full of them heading up the M4

Wednesday - Oxford to Exeter and back - 4 spotted on the M4 / M5

Its going to be interesting to see how many I count up to Liverpool and back tomorrow.

So.. with sales doing very well, are they getting too popular?

Roger

It will take a while to be as common as the fiat 500 or the mini.

You'd end up with RSI with them

I want them to be JUST popular for Skoda to keep making them, but boot too popular that they become common just like CFB says. emoticon-0110-tongueout.gif

In my part of the world - north London - they remain incredibly rare so no danger of RSI here!

I am asking.. how many Yeeti and how many Tiguan were solded ... in EuropE?

We picked ours up a couple of weeks ago and have yet to pass another Yeti. A very rare beast in the South Lanarkshire/Glasgow areas.

Well I don't have the figures for all of Europe but here is the figures for one of the biggest markets last month, Germany.

http://bestsellingca...me-in-7-months/

Tiguan is at number 22 with 3,353 sales and 25,394 for the year up to now (19th in total for the year).

The Yeti is at number 43 with 1,860 sales and 9,332 sales for the year (55th in total for the year)

Guess it will be the same in the UK. So for every 1 Yeti there will be roughly 2,5 Tiguans.

Also have a look at these threads:

Is the Yeti too popular? You will see more of them now but remember Å koda only has about 2% of the total UK market. And of that 2% a small percentage will be Yetis. So it will never be as common as MINIs and Cashcows thankfully. I like being the only one in the car park most of the time!

Me too

Johann - I nearly ended up with a Tiguan only to avoid the 6 month+ waiting list of the Yeti, looking at the £24-26K mark I seen a few CR170 R-Line 4x4 Tiguans, 1 or 2 had leather, the best example I could see was a 1 year old with 9K on the clock. At this point I was ready to bite the bullet and go on the waiting list fro the CR170 Yeti Elegance (and miss the car for the coming winter), luckily an ex-demo (fully loaded with extras that suited me) was available with 3K on the clock Mar 2001 reg. With all the options (Colombus,Sat Nav, Upgrade Speakers, Park Assist, Silver Trim, Phone Prep, Elegance) the cars rrp would have be £27,750.

I secured a good discount on my car given the extras and scarcity of the CR170 model, given that I was also beating a huge waiting list I was glad to pay an amount that no Tiguan could come near for extras. In essence the same car for a huge discount. One thing I have always enjoyed in the VRS is the feeling of having a bargain performance car, the same equivalent from Seat/VW/Audi is at prices that are incredible to me knowing what Skoda deliver across the range (The Superb 4x4 CR170s are a special car that have no match in the VAG stable IMHO).

Same goes with the Yeti for cost/performance/option ratios to other VAG ranges. We all known that smug feeling that only Skoda drivers have. Canny, canny intelligent buyers in my opinion. We may not top the sales charts, but I defy anyone to show us better VFM cars.

So for every 1 Yeti there will be roughly 2,5 Tiguans.

According to this: http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/combined/skoda_yeti there are currently 6,149 Yetis either licensed or SORNed in the UK. That's up from 4,831 at the end of 2010.

In comparison there are about 23,000 Tiguans in the UK, so that's more like 4:1 than 2.5:1.

There's nigh on 70,000 Fiat 500s and a truly scary 108,000 Qashqais (that's more than 200,000 letter "u"s that Nissan didn't have to buy for the tailgate badge :D )

It's difficult to get usable figures for Minis: I couldn't get the site to distinguish between Austin and BMW Minis. However, the low point of total Mini registrations was 109,000 in 2001. The current total is 398,000. If you guesstimate that maybe 9,000 Austin Minis have disappeared from the register in that time, and that there will have been some overlap between Austin and BMW Minis in 2001 (there is a significant uptick in new registrations that year, despite it being the low point of total registrations) then that suggests that there are nearly 300,000 BMW Minis in the UK at the moment. Stone me! And that figure includes 1,500 Clubmans - clearly some people have no taste...

Since getting my Yeti 4 weeks ago I have seen just 2 others. However I have had a man and his wife call after seeing the car in the drive to tell me they've got one on order....and, when parking in a hospital car park, an ambulance driver came over and asked if he could sit inside to see if he liked the seats !

I know a Nissan dealer and in his words not mine (not wanting to cause offence) He says "if it wasn't for motobility he would have closed his dealership a long time ago" Nissan do good deals on qashquai and the other ugly thing,,,,,, Juke so this is why there are so many on the road I would guess.

Still not seeing many Yetis at all - have just spent two weeks away, half in Milton Keynes and half in Provence (sublime to ridiculous, but I'll not say which way round for fear of causing offence!) and I saw only two SMs: none in France, one (white) parked in MK and one (red) on the M1 near Leicester services yesterday.

I saw a French plate Yeti today ... in Wales! I go to the post office everyday, it's only a 10 mile round trip and I see between one and four Yetis each trip. They seem extremely popular here in rural West Wales.

I see a local one about once a fortnight ....saw one yeti in Cornwall on a weeks holiday and in a years ownership have seen no more than 10 in total and that includes the two who came to Castle Combe

I drove from Croydon to Wallingford then to Shepton Mallet. I saw an Amazon Green SE 11 reg parked in one of the car parks at New Wine. Then drove back to Wallingford, Then to Uffington, then back home. No others seen on the road. Too popular? No. I see more X1's, Bentleys, Astons, Ferrari's etc than Yeti. I would be very rich if I had £1 for every cashcow I saw emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

According to http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk there are more Jukes registered than Yetis. I've only knowingly seen one round here - and my local Yeti tally is up to at least four. Who buys these things? They are, as you say, remarkably ugly.

One man's ugly is another man's distinctive. That sums up the Juke for me. I too see far more Juke's than Yeti's. Fair play to Nissan for spotting a gap in the market and then filling it with distinctive cars.

+1

They are pig ugly and minuscule inside (only being a Micra on stilts) but I'm glad the Puke exists though. It makes me smile like an ugly Bulldog does! Slobbering and ugly but still cute!

I saw a bulldog yesterday and it was exactly as you described. I wouldn't want one but I do like them, as with the Juke.
