Whir on start up

Featured Replies

Got a 53 plate VRS that has for a few months given quite a loud whir on start up, as if a fan that is starting up is slipping or something like that. This only happens on starting the engine, any ideas as to what it might be?

Thanks in advance.

could be secondary air pump - if the noise disappears after about 30 secs it is definitely this

Thanks, for some reason I have it in my head that it is that - maybe something I read on here a while back. I know that is the cause of the general roughness of a lot of cars until they warm up, wasn't 100% on this particular noise as now I've come back to look into it I can't find any references to such a noise using the search on here or Google.

are you sure its not the starting motor sticking, quite common on octies.and can be cured by cleaning

I'll see if I can get the sound on video and upload it to see what people think. If it is the air pump am I right in thinking the part number is 078906601D for a 53 plate VRS?

The rivets holding the pump together tend to fail. You can remove and repair it with some bolts.

Or remove it entirely :)

I've already done the rivet trick, not sure if it was done too late as the sound still persists.

That's the sound, does that help anyone?

Starter motor sticking, sounds just like mine has for the last few years, you can clean it up or replace

Defo starter motor that

yeah thats the octy grind alright. take out the battery and the battery box, remove the starting motor (couple of bolts) then clean the bendix gear with brake or carb cleaner, put it back on the car and the jobs oxo.

Thinking about replacing the starter motor as they are available on ebay for around £70, easy enough to replace for a novice?

Thanks for all the input so far, really appreciate it.

why dont you just take it off and clean it mate? mine was making that noise about three or four years ago,

i took it off and cleaned it and it has'nt made any noise since.

in fact i went to my skoda dealer to ask about a new one and they told me to clean it.

but if you want to buy a new one, go ahead but it amounts to the same job.

get yourself a workshop manual and you'll have no trouble doing it yourself.
