Can I pick some brains?

Featured Replies

Hey all, I'm thinking of getting shot of my Renault Modus dCi - while it's super economical quick and cheap it's one big pain in the ar$e when something goes wrong due to a real lack of engine space, it also has inherent problems with turbo's, crank oil starvation etc....

Anyhow my attention has turned to a V Reg Skoda Comfort tdi. Don't know much about the motor so any thought's on the lumps they use, parts prices, any common engine faults and fuel system faults would be great.. I'm a complete neurotic when it comes to cam-belts and servicing so a difficulty rating from 1-10 would also be spot on.

Thanks

Hi,

Is it the 1.4TDi or 1.9TDi?

Not really aware of any common problems on either engine (well, the turbo can go, but then that's always possible, and not something you really hear of on a non-vRS). :)

Parts are standard VW group, so quite reasonably-priced, especially if you can find a local TPS that will serve you (e.g. cam-belt kit and clutch for the 1.9TDi 100 bhp are around £110 + VAT, oil filter £3 + VAT, etc).

There's a guide for the cam-belt on the 1.9TDi vRS (very similar to the 1.9TDi 100 bhp, I guess) here: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/94593-fabia-vrs-timing-belt-change-diy/

Dunno if that's any help!

Hey martinch thanks for that. Forgot to mention its a 1.9tdi Comfort.

To be honest it looks a really nice motor, not like the days of old lol. I would imagine mpg would be OK for steady driving and the estate looks nice and roomy, pity I didn't buy one in the first place!!

Thanks..

Are you sure that it's a V reg. The Fabia was launched on 01/03/2000, which was when the W reg came out. There were some V reg ones, registered as demonstrators, but I recall that PD engine wasn't available until some time after the model launch.

I'm getting around 52mpg* out of mine, mostly going to and from work (~10m, max 40mph, mostly 20-30mph, some B-roads and some town). Have had > 65mpg on a run before.

* Calculated by me using the odometer & amount of diesel going in. My trip computer reads as ~1mpg worse than in reality.

Mines the TDi Comfort, and it really a decent car. I drive about 100miles a day, 60 of those on a motorway and average 54mpg (again through mileage v actual diesel used). Mines a bit newer than yours (2003) but has 135k miles on the clock. Engine wise its never missed a beat, nothing remotely showing a problem. There's some issues with front suspension/ARB bushes which I've had replaced but this is normal for these cars.

The car is plenty quick enough in town, and has enough poke on the motorway (still accelerates quite well from 70+). Also being the TDi you'll have the option of remapping it upto 130ish bhp if you want something a bit nippier (not done it myself, but plan on doing).

As long as its got a full service history (at least had regular oil / cambelt changes) the engine should be fine. I'm convinced my car will fall apart before the engine gives way ;)

:S

Ah, yes.... it's a Y 2001... what a tit!

Thanks for the views chaps, makes me even more likely to buy one when the times right. Out of interest what's a PD engine, also has anyone been brave enough to run it on 50/50 diesel/biodiesel, not sure these engines are common rail? My Modus will run on it at that mix but the injectors ain't to fond of it

Thanks all
