ASR scared the crap out of me!!

Featured Replies

Just got the ASR to kick in (by accident) on a very large roundabout, in 3rd  thing is the whole car vibrated like i was driving over a rumble strip at about 80. Anybody else felt this when ASR kicks in?

Yeah it's exactly the same as slaming the brakes on and they vibrate .....still makes you jump though

Funny that - when I got 7x + 10 mph the R100 always feels like that  - pretty sure it's just the engine noise making it appear like the car is vibrating though ;)

I sure get it if the tyre pressures are not even and/or wheels are not balanced. If they are out you get massive vibration at speed - so I check regularly :D

It gets worse...try booting it from stand still....you get going and then the power is cut....not very nice.

It's not too bad when you get "slip" when on the move...but generally I turn it off.

Thought it just sorted wheelspin when you boot it from a standing start?

Does it do more than this then?Thought the clever stuff was reserved for those with the ESP trickery

The ASR works whenever either of the front wheels are turning significantly faster than the others. So if they spin when you're doing 60 mph it'll think you're having problems and do it's stuff.

The ESP is a similar system but it knows if you're cornering at the time and can apply the brakes to wheels individually.

Agree on both of those' date=' but worst in my experience is coming off roundabout near where I work. There's a Walkers Crisps depot (lots of spilled diesel from topped-off tanks), so the roundabout is v. slippy. Immediately after you come off it there is a wide strip of high-traction stuff right across the road (I think to stop cars approaching the roundabout from skidding). Anyway, exit the roundabout driving in a progressive manner, and the ASR keeps the revs under control on the slippy surface. But then, I hit the high-traction surface and so the wheels aren't fighting for grip any more...

BANG!!!

...the traction control turns off and the power is reapplied with such force it feels like I've just run over the biggest pothole ever! Shaln't be doing that again! :(

The high traction stuff (trade name Shell-grip) is a fantastic cornering aid though!

EDL is noisiest, literally sounds like someone thumping the axle with a hammer!

Yep! The EDL cut in quite a bit in my Ibiza. Sounds as if you done some real damage!! :D

Suprisingly, hasn't done it yet in the Fabia, but the ASR has cut in a few occasions but makes no noise.

With the haldex disengaged (ie FWD) and ESP off on an icy night, was the only time I have heard EDL working.....

What speed does EDL work upto, I was doing about 40ish, thought EDL only worked upto 15mph  Not sure where I heard that :(

Couldn't agree more.

Saw a gap in traffic on a busy roundabout so tried to whip thru but TC cut in.

Brown pants moment as i struggled to regain grip as a rather large lorry was aiming for me. :thumbdwn:

Sounds like that was what happened, not the ASR then!
