vRS TDi EGR valve

Featured Replies

Has anyone had problems with fumes in the cabin from the EGR valve, either coming from a tubing clip being loose, a gasket on the unit or the actual egr valve itself?

Just been told mine has possible faulty egr valve or possible clip/gasket. I asked the dealer to look at it whilst they did the fuel injector change out as could smell fumes when at standstill. I had a look and could see soot marks on underside of bonnet just above a tube with a clip around it. Was told by a mate that it seemed to be blowing from this top tube. Dealer says it is suspected to be from the bottom somewhere and that the last one they did was the actual EGR valave and the car was off the road for 1 month as the part was om back order!!!

They now want to look further into it (in other words it aint a quick fix freebie while they have it in for another job) and try to ascertain exactly where it is coming from. I have a Skoda after market warranty but realise the investigation labour charge will not be claimable but just hope the part, whatever it ends up being, IS claimable.

Bit fed up really. After the abs sensor issue, cambelt change, faulty tyres hence unexpected new ones, fuel injector issue and now another problem (potentially expensive and without car for how long?).

Any faults logged, that they mentioned to you?

Would you consider removing EGR operation completely? EGR bypass kits are available.

I had a similar fumes issue a while back and i eventually figured out that the pipe on the exaust side of the turbo was loose, just needed to tighten the allen bolt on the clip

and as an aside i had to replace my egr as it was faulty but the car was going in limp mode with that no fumes

hth

edit :Also as regards the egr valve, i got a vw one that had a slightly different part number but the unit was the same, will see if i can find it was cheaper too :)and probably not on back order but not sure what engine u have, but it might be worth checking with a motor factors as thats how i found out

If you are looking elsewhere in the VAG group for a replacement (good idea), make sure you're looking for one from a PD170, as they differ from the PD140 units. Presume yours is a PD170 and not a CR TDi? Maybe post up your vehicle year so we can confirm.

Yeah, 170 tdi (are there any other diesel vRS's??) 07 year.

They did not mention any fault codes. I was told by a mate who recently changed my pads for me that it seemed to be top turbo tube but dealer says it seems to be coming from bottom somewhere. I hope it is just a clip that needs tightening. It runs fine and has never limped anywhere :)

Just that you didn't mention the model year, and it's not mentioned on your profile info, so I wasn't clear whether you were talking about the PD or CR TDi unit.

What is the difference in

a) running

and cost for the bypass kit v egr valve (in worst case scenario)

It says TDi on thread title. I thought they were the PD units and the CR were just that. Soz for confusion.

They're both a TDI unit.... :)

No difference in running when a bypass is fitted. Engine check light will come on, when running a standard map, as it's expecting the EGR to be there.

Kit is about £70.

Had a chat with my mechanic when he returned the Golf from the exhaust modding, and he suggested just blanking the EGR with maybe one of these that way it keeps the OE look, and also he thought that as mine is a vacuum type (not sure on the PD170 whether its vacuum or electric) it may not throw up the CEL??? Could be worth a try I s'pose.

PD170 is electric, PD140 is Vacuum

ive got my EGR Removed with a Roadsport kit fitted, Warning light is on as said because its epecting the EGR to be there
