Coolant Leak

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I've lost a bit of coolant over the past couple of weeks so thought I'd check it over today when topping it up (It was under the minimum mark). I noticed that the expansion tank is leaking slightly from the left hand side where there seams to be some kind of clip half way up the tank where it joins (if this makes sense!). Has anyone else had this issue? I presume a new expansion tank will be in order which is no problem as the coolant temp light has been coming on periodically since the bad winters so it needed toing anyway to sort that sensor. Any idea how much i'm looking at to get it replaced?

Cheers

Marc

when you say clip, are you referring to the clip on the hose returning the coolant back to the bottle from the engine or the actual overflow on the bottle itself?

if it coming out of the overflow on the expansion tank. the cooling system is pressurising. try a new coolant bottle and top first as like you said the sensor sounds like its going faulty. if it still pressurises after that look at blocked thermostat, blocked radiator, faulty impellor on waterpump and finally if all them are fine mostly probably head gasket. all the above issues arent uncommon on the vrs engine

It must be the overflow (never realised it had one), it's on the side closest to the wing no where near any hoses. The oil looks clean enough, so I don't think it's head gasket - I hope not anyway. I had the water pump done 11 months ago so that SHOULD be ok. Could be the stat I suppose... It's going in for a service in the not too distant future so I'll get them to have a look.. I'm pretty clueless with engines!

Thanks for your advice.

this problem is becoming more and more common ,,, ive had it for a while now, about once a week coolant light comes on when i start up in the morning , stop engine, jump out , pop bonnet and release the pressure in the expansion tank and problem solved. no sign whatsoever of head gasket failure, the only loss of coolant is the small amount that bubbles up when the pressure is released. With the engine running and cap off you can see a good flow of coolant so the pump is fine. Before i part with some more cash,,, im going to chuck in some radweld ,,, unless someone gives me a concrete reason not to ?????

dont use radweld it doesnt mix well with g12 coolant can block your thermostat and matrix up. you say there is no sign of head gasket failure but if you leave the car overnight and there is still pressure in the cooling system the only logical explanation is exhaust gasses in the coolant.

I have been suffering for months with this..... Turns out to be a cracked cylinder head!

Trying to get it sorted now. Hope it's not this bad for you dude

Hi Kerms34, can you describe how the coolant flows and should look?

not too sure what you are asking me there Rex ,,, coolant should be pink ?

well radweld is in now ,, will see if it works over next couple of days
