buying a car with higher miles (80k ish)

as title, my MK1 vrs got written off a few weeks ago and i'm struggling to find a replacement for it in the shape of a mk1 so am considering a mk2, only thing is for my budget of around 5-6k i'm looking at cars of 2006 and with around 80k miles on the clock.

how does the mk2 stand up to the miles? i see there are some cars out there running around with 140k+ on the clock but do they start to get expensive as they get more miles on? also are there any real problem areas to look for on the mk2? i know with the mk1 there was the obvious issues of split pipes and and coilpacks going down etc and every car has it's weakness so what is it in the mk2?

I bought mine a year ago with 115K on it, it now has 135K!

Mileage isn't an issue - treat it like any other used car purchase

  • Service History
  • General Mechanical Condition
  • How does it drive??
  • Check turbo
  • Check Clutch and flywheel
  • Check A/C or climate work OK
  • When was the cambelt last done?
  • Get an AA check or similar - well worth the money

Edit - forgot to say it flew through the MoT on Friday without even an advisory.

I believe there is a member on here selling his mk2 octy VRS for a sensible amount of money. Check out the general car chat forum (I think) I have generally always bought cars with 80k+ on them and usually if they have been looked after they will keep going. My superb had 80k on it and I sold it on at 125k with no major issues..

Can only add my limited experience, buy I bought a one owner (HSBC) diesel Octy II just over a year ago. It was an '07 Ambiente estate with 84k on clock and a full dealer service history (so cambelt, etc. all been done by Skoda).

I paid £7, which was probably a little over the top, but I got a really good deal trading in my old car (which needed £3k worth of work doing) and 6 month warranty.

Apart from having to replace the odd worn part on the suspension, and now the brake disc and pads (at 101k), both of which should be expected on a vehicle at that mileage, I have had no problems with the car at all.

It also passed it's MOT this year without a hitch.

Car starts first time in all weathers, drives well and (fingers crossed) shows no sign of failing anytime soon. I'm intending to keep it for the next 6 years or so, so am not bothered about the high mileage.

I bought the car below for 7K on the weekend, 37k on the clock

I bought mine with 145000 on the clock.

It was an ex company car and has been very well maintained from new with a full service history and the car still feels tight and goes like a rocket.The only thing to fail has been a cv joint boot.As i do about 20000 miles a year a cheap high mileage car makes sense to me as i will run it for about 3 years then change it.

Cv joint boot is what I need fixed on mine 1 but garage sorting this before collection

80k miles is nothing and while there may be a few little bits that need sorting, that can be done at time of purchase by getting an AA report etc and then bargaining/asking for it to be fixed.

I take it you're after a petrol?

I'm on 105k on a petrol with mods in my sig, car runs superb. Split pipes rare and there is a campaign ongoing if you have older coil packs of a certain revision you can get them replaced FOC.

im a taxi driver and mine was bought with 150000 on for £2500 on a 06 i had it serviced and new timing belt it now got 227000 on it and it as smooth as ever i service every 4 months and buy new not used parts and it will be fine ...and im going to take this one to at lease 400000miles (not k) my last one an 04 19tdi went to 310000 and its still on road as a taxi i dae better its got well over 400000 and the body work is still in good nick to so to look at it you cant tell its done that many...

If the service history is ok there is no problem and 80k is nothing to worry about.

I would buy a diesel rather than petrol, unless the difference in price is too big.

And even if the cambelt needs to be done soon, is only around £ 300 to go for another 80.000 miles.

Judging by the amount of Octy's running around as taxi's there must be plenty of big milage's out there, particularly diesels. If a car is well maintained 200k miles should not be a problem these days.

I would rather have an 07 with 80k than an 04 with 30k any day.

same turbo but the bloody clutch went the day after i bought it but i got 2 months out of it before i changed it...

and i went to a company called gsf that deal in german parts and save a chunk of change but still not cheap .just hope the 6 speed box does not go but there is a place in leeds that other taxi drivers use and their good and cheap.

you mean automatic tpye thing ? would do but heavier on fuel so i will stick to what i know.
