Is Super Unleaded worth the extra cost?

Featured Replies

remapped 1.8t dynod at 205 bhp

I reckon each time I fill up, it cost me £4.50 extra per tank full (Shell is 9p per litre more for Super vs ordinary unleaded)

Am I wasting money?

The car does not get driven hard very often

Yes, without a doubt yes! Always go Vpower if you can. It only works out as about 2litres different if that so I don't consider sweating it over having a better running engine that will last longer in life and in miles

yup wast of money there mate.

The car will prob run smoother and a bit cleaner and eco but the diff in price is not worth it.

Now if you go for Sainsbury's 97 or Tesco Momentum 99 then prob yes its worth it.

TBH tho with the fuel save stuff Shell put in you dont need Optimax or Vpower what ever they call it now. I get good eco on the shell 95 as I do on sainsburys 97 but the shell 95 is same price as the 97 or there abouts.

Personally I hate using 95 as the car is flat and lumpy and I dont get the mpg out of it I do with the 97 prob because I push it more as it doesnt drive right.

You need to do some tests on each fuel and try drive the same on each, take the adv and work it out. personally for me I get more mile per tank on the 97 which also is well priced and on my way out unlike Tesco or Shell so it makes sence to get from there. I am getting 420+ mile before the light even comes on. thats 5 days travel for me but on 95 the light comes on around the 400 mark at around J23/24 Magor/Newport on my way home. Thats driving at the speed limits.

Sains 95 = £1.329

Sains 97 = £1.369

last time I went past on Sunday.

Works out about 12miles less per fill but I find you gain an extra 5mpg which gives you an extra 22miles of fuel which mean for an extra £4 you gain 10 miles more before your next fill

also with mine it depends on the wheels I have fitted and the ECU I run lol.

I have 2 ECU

1 generic st 1 (good on fuel 40+mpg adv driving at the speed limits)

2 RSTuning 226 / 262 (so so 37-39 adv need to drive carefully tho)

depending on tyres/wheels

Rims:

LCR 7.5x18 225 40 18(not far off the spiders)

Spiders 7x17 225 45 17 (Best eco)

TD PR 1.2 8x18 225 40 18 (not good on fuel)

Mine does the same mpg on shell 95 as the v power, get slightly less on Sainsbury's 95.

As for being lumpy or running rough mine doesn't on whatever it runs on. Usually run it on shell 95 just aint worth the extra cost of v power or any 99 as I don't feel any difference

Not really worth it as you said you don't drive it hard very often.

I filled up with V-power for 5 years when I had a GTiR...mind you,it was MUCH more cheaper than it is now...around 80-90p a litre.

Tried shell n all others and mine runs better on tesco 99ron. More mpg per tank aswell, and it's cheaper

I think you can feel the difference if your mapped as mine is mapped for high octane and if I put 95ron you can feel it holding back as the ecu is probably retarding the timing? But to be honest at the moment my clutch is slipping so can't push it hard it anyway so I just put any old fuel in,just pull in wherever I'm passing

V-Power for me, never use anything else!

BP, Esso and Texaco's super unleaded fuels makes my car drink like George Best (before he died).

I'd would however like to try that slop BP do that's 102 RON.... But at about £3 a litre they can go kiss my ar$e!

Either way whatever fuel you put in, it's still fooooking expensive!!! Robbing ba$*ards!

Steve

Too true

YES!!

Shell V Power all the way - All the cars that we get in here for Revo tuning we can ALWAYS get more timing out of a car running on Shell V-Power compared to standard fuel and compared to Supermarket 99 fuel

We have again seen loads on Tesco 99 and we can get no more power out of the car than if it was running 95.

Hope this helps!

Mike

P.S I agree with Steve too - either way it is going to cost a fortune! :(

Surely it depends on whether you got your car mapped with v-power in it or just normal 95?

Mine has revo stage 2 and with the sps module you can adjust timing and boost so if you run v power you can advance the timing more but as with mine its set for v power and if I run lesser fuel the ecu must retard the timing and that's why I notice it been down on power?

depending on tyres/wheels

Billy, is the difference more to do with the tyre compounds than the rims? would have thought that the TD's are the lightest? also are the pressures on the 18's the same?

Thanks for the replies.

I got a stage one generic R-Tech remap, spec 1 (I think).

And was told either ordinary 95 ron or higher were fine to use.But I've only used Tesco 99 or Shell V power.

Although once or twice when neither were available close by, I've put a lesser amount of ordinary in, just the minimum though (rather than brim it like I would if better stuff was available)

yup, I have Toyo t1R on the spiders and Falken 452 on the LCR and TDs, and all the psi are the same. When the 225 45 17 toyos are done Ill be going for 250 50 17 again as that will be better again. I think its down to the width aswell

I would of thought the TDs were the best due to being lighter but I got better eco on the R32 reps I had which weighed a ton

all to do with resistance I think.

You have to remember with the supermarket fuels is that they put really strong additives in the fuel so it can rot pipes quite easy. I know quite a few engines to break because of supermarket fuels.

For anyone who says V-power doesn't make a difference...

Is this just a one time fill you are doing? Because you have to flush the old fuel out completely first about 5 full tanks i've heard. Then you will notice the difference.

I agree there.

V power is by far the best fuel Ive used, and mine was mapped on it. The thing is tho it is uneconomical to use it now as the OP states its 9p more per L.

Its not just about what the engine runs like with certain fuels tho, its everything . How far it goes on that fuel and the overall cost, not just the PPL(pence per liter) but the PPM(pence per mile) and how much fuel is used getting to the fuel station as going out your way just to get cartaing fuel or even cheaper priced fuel is sometimes really using more fuel to get there so makes the fuel you think you are getting cheap is actually a few Pence more a liter.

Hope you can follow that lol, coz my head hurts now.

TBH I am sure that the base fuel we all buy (supermarket, or other) is all the same stuff and all comes from one big tankover London way. Where the fuels differ is in the addatives and cleaners that are put in. Shell uses lots of cleaners and potions where say Tesco 99 is just the base fuel with RON boosters and prob no cleaners or minimum.

in the end tho the higher the RON the cleaner the engine will run. its just down to then are you prepared to spend more for that alone or do you just want a fuel that gets you there? Altho V Power is undisputidly the best fuel out there you dont gain enough from it to warrent spending 7-9pence(£3.85-£4.95 per 55L tank) more on a liter of it.

Personaly I want a fuel that gets me there for a good PPM but also runs nice as is a good compromise. for now Sainsburys Super 97 is spot on as its got everything and I almost need to drive thru the forcourt to get to the main road to go out anywhere lol.

Just my thoughts

Billy

I'm with this point of view. I'd prefer to have V power, but the price differential starts to hurt after a while and Shell know that some consumers will just keep buying it because they are convinced it makes a material enough different to warrant the price difference. I don't buy into that, nor do i accept that normal super unleaded will damage your car and even if it did, i'm sure other things would break first or i would have sold it way before it stops working because i didn't use V Power.

The only way Shell will drop their V Power prices is if enough buyers decide to say no and shop elsewhere for a while.

Have always used Shell V power since ive had the car.

Watching the price meter on the pump whizz round can be very off putting tho'.
