big stuttering problem

Featured Replies

I have recently bought a 2001 vrs. It has 84k, fsh half at skoda, the rest at other garages.

It has been mapped and has a dyno printout of 194bhp, not much ontop of the 180 standard i thought. It is fitted with an induction pipe with filter fitted just behind the passenger side wheel by the battery. It has silicone boost pipes and a recirculating boost valve, looking at it, the mods all look like they have been done properly. It also has a semi loud backbox which i might remove, unsure as of yet.

The problem im having is when im driving economically, at low revs 1500-2000 it seems to stutter, the turbo spools up and then dumps, making the car kangaroo a touch. This is annoying. It is even worse if i go for a bit of a play in the car, it stutters a bit when boosting, but when returning to driving economically again the car is very hesitant under 2k, then when idling it hunts a lot. It gets to the point where it sounds like it will cut out, then the it revs and sits back at idle, over and over.

I know this may be a few problems mixed together but any ideas??

Thanks in advance, Ben

refit standard airbox and filter, get standard map back on

then see if it stutters

Get a smoke test done to see if you have a boost/vacuum leak. Check to if you have the old black coolant temp sensor as when it fails it can cause a lot of fueling issues. If you have a black CTS change it for the revised green one because it will fail even if it hasn't already. It's also worth unplugging the MAF sensor & seeing if the car runs better. MAF failure is very common & a lot of people make the mistake of fitting a cheap non VAG MAF, which in my experience never work properly.

had a similar problem with my 1sr remap

had to have it took off and another put back on then sorted and went a lot better

was also only getting around 17-21mpg when it was running bad

realy lumpy and not a lot of power got even worse going up hills

to be honest 197bph seems a bit low

stage 1 remap on mine was 217bhp

if you know who done the remapping for you take it back and ask them to do it again incase

saves spending more money out incase you have the same problem i had

Check for leaks in the dump valve diaphragm, any fault codes thrown up? The N75 and N249 valve is another port of call when boost is fluctuating like you've described too.

As said earlier get a smoke test done as there are lots of tiny pipes that might be causing this. It might also be worth checking your plugs over.

If all of this is ok, get your map checked as it doesn't sound like a particularly good one at the moment:)

Hope you get it sorted!!

I will get it into a garage soon, it hasnt thrown a fault code up no, thats whats beyond me! Iv had 1.8ts before and as soon as a fault happens it flags a fault up! Has anyone on here got a 2001 vrs, with stage 1 map? Do all vrs use a k03s turbo or do the early ones use a k03? I know the k03 is for the 150bhp golf etc, do they map the same engine different or is it a different turbo? If they used the k03 it would explain the not so good remap stats....id hope theyd have used the k03s tho!

It's because your a bellend lol.

Cheers bumlord, nice to see an old face. You getting the octavia then?

All vRS Octavia's were KO3s turbos.

it sound like a dump valve prob to me. i had the same prob with my dump valve replaced it it ran good again .

Give the crankcase/camshaft breather hoses an inspection too.

OEM ones seem to be made of paper mache and are prone to splitting.

Both the y piece and the one under the inlet manifold where split on mine and made it behave bucking bronco at low/mid revs!

It was crap on fuel too... suspect it was over fuelling to compensate for the vacuum leak.

Could well be a maf issue.
