Microsoft Skydrive Shortcuts

Featured Replies

Anybody got a clue as to whether there is a quick way of transferring files from personal folders in MS Outlook to a folder in the document section of Skydrive.

I installed MS Live Mesh, hoping it would be able to do this and do it in background whilst I got on with something else. It doesn't appear that Live Mesh is capable of seeing personal folders in Outlook.

So I have had to resort to doing it all by hand - copy the contents of the Outlook folder to a temporary folder on my desktop and then copy them into the relevant Skydrive folder - this is taking me about 30 minutes per folder and as I've got another half-dozen of these folders to copy, and have got better things to do with my life, i wondered whether there was a quicker way.

Also, is there a facility for moving files archived in Skydrive between Skydrive folders and is thre any other skydrive folder/file house keeping software for reviewing/weeding the archives ?

Do you just want to keep a backup of your Outlook email, or do you want to access each email individually within Skydrive?

If it's the former, you could just close down Outlook and transfer the PST storage file Outlook uses to store all your messages in - you can then transfer just one file upto Skydrive.

Just a back-up of Outlook. But I want original files as the backup, not just links.

I was thinking along the lines that I should be able to create a list specifing source (Either on Desktop or MS Outlook Mail server) and Destination (A skydrive folder or folders), send the instruction to MS Live Mesh and its all done for me and I get a notification, on completion, by E-mail. Might save some unnecessary double file handling as far as the Mail side of the process was concerned.

I ws forgetting its Microsoft, AKA Toy software.

All your email is stored within a PST file. If you want a backup of your mail, close Outlook and then transfer this file upto SkyDrive.

Job done.

Synctoy might work, set it to sync your PST file to the skydrive location?

It will do it automatically for you.

Theoretically. :wonder:

I would recommend against backing up the live PST file... as when it changes the whole thing would probably have to be re-uploaded. Plus Outlook isn't very good at sharing an open file...

Suggest booting PC, zipping up PST and then uploading that zip to Skydrive.

Yep, that's why I was suggesting closing Outlook. Twice. You wouldn't be able to do anything with it, if Outlook is open.

Seems this isn't how the OP wants to do it though.

Not exactly sure if Synctoy constantly monitors the folder or syncs at a pre determined time / day as I don't use it.

PC is left on all of the time, make sure you close Outlook, Synctoy works it's magic at 3am.

That should work if, OP leaves PC on all of the time, Synctoy allows scheduled syncs.

I want to take a snap-shot in time of the content of these Outlook personal files. If the PST file contains the full text of e-mails, other documents and attachments and could be re-read by Outlook at a later date when recovered from Skydrive, then it would be OK.

However, I suspect that whilst the saving and export of the PST to Skydrive would be relatively easy, the recovery and re-read might be more problenmatic. PST may be encrypted, so that it can only be read by Outlook.Further, at the time of re-reading, whilst you could set outlook to "Offline" to the Mail Server to prevent the thing automatically attempting to synchronise with the mail server and updating, there may be other dependencies and dependent files whose data will have evolved whilst the archived PST has been static, so there might be correspondence problems.

Has any body ever saved a PST file like this and successfully recovered and re-read at a later date ?

Yes.

I backup and add PST files back into Outlook quite often.

Fair do's. I'll give it a try.
