Auto Express

Featured Replies

I've just read the latest group test on family diesel hatches.

The Octavia 2.0 tdi 140 achieved 33.6mpg.

The Mitsubishi lancer (with similar2.0 vag engine) 31.6.mpg

The Chevrolet cruze 2.0 vcdi a dismal 29.5 mpg.

Do Autoexpress test all their vehicles in and around London,or just drive around with the handbrakes on?:smirk:

To get that sort of MPG they'd have to be ragging them

They are not light footed and it usually also includes the performance tests too.

So figures are always a bad example.

They must be thrashing the hell out of them to get that.

After about 500 miles of ragging my car to within an inch of its life on the Cumbria run it still returned 41.6mpg

My old gaffer had Toyota hilux invincible and every time I got in the trip comp mileage said 35mpg, when I got out it read 19mpg!

Mind you the Octy ain't that brilliant, probably about 450 to 500 miles on a full tank of derv.

Can't understand........heavy right foot..moi?

Do you do things like revving it into the limitter in newtral, then side-stepping the clutch to move off from rest: The Guild of Muttering Rotters do this to get test figures.

You can't rev to limiter in neutral or even with it in gear if the clutch is down, it's stops at about 3000rpm.

My Audi was the same, don't know why!

They must be really thrashing the cars to get their figures. I just drove my Dad's Octy 1.4TSI back from Alnwick. Boot full of golf clubs and suitcase, 3 people in it, going by back roads, not the A1, with air-con running all the way. The car said 45mpg when we arrived home and the computer is estimating 500miles + for this tankfull.

That was cruising at speed limits when possible and dispatching the odd dawdler. My first Octy, the 1.6 8v engine, would barely get to 40mpg driven the same, even when it was empty.
