Mpg question

What mpg should one get from a standard VRS in mixed driving.

Since fitting my new maf, mine seems to have dropped a lot.

I was seeing 31.2, now with the same driving 26.2

I have just done a 170mile trip from my house down to edinburgh and my trip computer was showing 37.4 when i arrived here. Thats a good mixture of driving aswell plus i have a remap.

On a 30 mile journey with a mix of 70 mph m/way, and round town 30-40mph usually its between 35- 37mpg.

In grandad mode I have managed 41mpg (indicated on display not convinced).

With 225/45 performance tyres (going from 205/50 motorway Pirelli's I saw a 3.3mpg drop averaged out)I sit somewhere around 30-30.5 average over a few thousand miles. Motorway'll see 34ish whereas A/B-road with a mix of overtaking, sitting at 70 etc will usually revert to 29-31 depending on the road. 26mpg would indicate an issue, especially if it's such a drop over what you had previously.

I have just come back from the Cumbria meet 400 motorway miles and 300 spirited miles, and an average of 29.8mpg only managed 34.4 at 80 on motorway.

I didnt realise tyres can make a difference, in all fareness what we are doing is not really a "back to back" comparison, Im sure other factors play a part.

ie: engine age / wear, mods done, hills / flat , traffic speed, weather and of course how heavy the right shoe is :) .

NB: mine is running a standard map / std wheels on 205 conti contact 3's

Did you fit a VAG MAF? I only ask because I once bought a MAF from GSF, & the car ran badly. Always averaged about 29/30 mpg & high 30's motorway from all 5 of the VAG 1.8T's that I've owned in the past.

I'm an extremely boring person, so keep a petrol log and have since I bought the car new. I'm currently getting an average of 35.6 mpg per tank, (over the last 10 tanks), measured by filling up at the same pump each time and working out the mpg manually, not by reading the car's trip computer.

I've got a remap though, but things were pretty much the same before anyway. Hope this helps in some way.

I'll throw a spanner in the works then and say I have averaged 33mpg over 2000 miles, mixture of town, motorway and spirited B roads. Thats with lower gearing and a diff at the back. To get the OP's 26.2 mpg would suggest it's not running the correct air/fuel ratio. I am however running 205/55/16's on 99 RON fuel. I think it was Billy2891 that posted advice recently about tyre size to fuel economy differences.

Hi,

I've got 225/45/17 tyres on my standard vRS.

I filled it up to the brim the other week, drove upto Harlow and back.I did about 230 miles and the petrol gauge showed more than half a tank remaining. All the mileage was motorway doing about 75-85 mostly.Flexed my big toe occasionally, though.

Exactly half a tank on the petrol gauge,it showed I had done about 245 miles. The last 15 miles was town driving.

I'm VERY impressed with the motorway enconomy

Not sure what the MPG is but you can work it out for yourselves...

Ooo I love MPG's. I am all for it, sad really.

Yup I did throw up some eco comparrisons on tyres wheels and maps lol as I have 2 ECU's and 3 sets of wheels lol. I chop and change a lot.

Ill do a more comprihensive list thisaft after I've had a sleep.

One thing uI will say tho on mpg is anyone can drive fast and get low mpg but it takes a good fluid driver to get good mpg.

Billy

For the OP, ide say there is a prob there with such a low number, even around town none stop I am well in the high 30's

Just to add something to mix, could the drop in mpg be down to switching to super unleaded as I have been running it on that since fitting the new maf and plugs.

So are they better on fuel on 95ron.

i average 38-42mpg daily depending if i hit traffic or not on the 25mile drive to work.

my combined average sits at 36-37mpg all the time

thats on a mapped car with 18's, CAI, S3 N75

Bit late but here goes,

I have kept a record of my MPG since I got the car new in 2005. since then Ive had 4 different maps on it and lots of mods and wheels/tyres.

When it was new and std I was getting from 7.3mpl to 7.8mpl on my weekly drive from Mirfield to Catterick Garrison and to the shops and a bit of cab happy driving on the weekends.

I then Had a RED DOT remap and could never get a reading as I kept getting EML on and disconnected the Battery to cancel it. (before I was on here and I would never reccomend them!)

Joined Brisky and had the car sorted and back to std but I had 18 x 8 et35 mk5 R32 Reps on(heavy)(225 40 18) with that "std map" I was again getting between 7.5 and 8.3 mpl this time from Brawdy(Haverfordwest) to Cardiff/Bristol

I then Had an APR map which I didnt like and that was around the same mpl, then went for a CCCTech remap from Upsolute which turned out to be RUBBISH. I had to drive it like a girl as it was that bad, the boost just fell off at 3k+ that was pritty good on fuel due to this.

the history is pritty poor really.

Now I have 3 sets of wheels and 2 ECUs.

ECU 1 = RSTuning Custom Map 226 bhp 262 lb/ft RR(other work been done since)

ECU 2 = Imposible Performance Generic Map

Wheels:

1/ Team Dynamic Pro Race 1.2 18x8 et35 225 40 18 Falken 452

2/ LCR 18x7.5 225 40 18 Falken 452

3/ vRS Spiders 17x7 225 45 17 Toyo t1R

on a 81 mile daily run + some small town driving in Cardiff using Cruise control and setting to the speed limits on way there and 62 on way home.

ECU 1 + 1/ = 34-35mpg indicated

ECU 1 + 2/ = 35-37mpg indicated

ECU 1 + 3/ = 36-38mpg indicated

with this ECU I can do 5 runs from Cardiff to Avonmouth and on the return trip on the 5th day my fuel light always comes on between j23a and j26 M4 without fail, I have never got home with it still not on using the RSTuning map.

Same trip just at the speed limits there and back.

ECU 2 + 1/ = 36-37 mpg indicated

ECU 2 + 2/ = 36-39 mpg indicated

ECU 2 + 3/ = 40-42 mpg indicated.

on the way back just now I set the cruise to 58-60 mph and indicated mpg was 44.2 as I stopped in my space outside the house, thats with the IP remap ECU and the 17" spiders.

I will be putting 205 50 17 tyres on the spiders next time too as the spiders are the best for eco and handling/grip is better with them too. I have found that OEM wheels are the best thing for the car too as the light TDs I have are not that good on fuel for some reason, I had better eco using the R32 Reps I had last year while the TD rim was getting looked at by Rimstock due to a fracture in it(had a new one made up)

wheels and tyres makes a huge difference, oh and one more thing I also think that budget Hard tyres are better on fuel too but no good for grip, its all down to resistance is it not?

I will do some more tests over the next few weeks with the ECU and wheels lol.

5 trips, 1 tank of Sainsburys Super, 1 ECU and one set of wheels, = ???

Brilliant report Billy clear and concise  ,

The trouble with this subject, interesting tho' it is that there are so many variables thrown in the pot, still its nice to see the effects of different permutations.

Mine states 32.1 over the last 1500 miles at the moment and i mainly do town driving.

I could get 40 easy on country roads to work and back ..... now i foudn the leakign vac pip and replaced it ... i struggle to get over 36 lol!

I have been reading through and no one has picked up on the ECU yet, so I will jump on in...

IF your prior MAF was dodgy then the ECU would have adjusted itself to run with that MAF. Because you have fitted your new MAF then the ECU needs to re learn how to run with that MAF. I have found in the past when changing timing/ignition/airflow based bits I will get a really **** MPG for a week then after the ECU has adjusted it goes back to normal.

@Furry - What difference does the S3 N75 make over the vRS one?
