170bhp 4x4 Hatch Tyre wear?

Featured Replies

I really have no cause for complaint regarding this Superb vehicle, my second Skoda with 4 wheel traction (my wife has one of the last Fabia Vrs models of yesteryear and that is pretty good also, 60+ MPG!)

The Conti-Sport2 225/40/R18s are good in snow if used properly, good in rain,in fact good all round........apart from mileage!

There has to be a better, reasonably priced tyre that will last longer? I do not consider 17k a fair distance for a driver of many years experience and countless miles driving experience world wide, and who has never had to complain before?

This is a large tyre which should last longer in my opinion when driven carefully...even though it's fairly low profile. I wonder if this is why the Conti-sport 3 has superceded it??

Can any one personally recommend a better tyre that is also a little quieter?

Thanks for your anticipated response..

(And if you don't have a Superb...test drive one now to see what all the praise is about!)

Have a look at the mytyres site here: http://www.mytyres.co.uk/start.html put your size in and look at what's available. Many of the premium brands have independant test results alongside. The results are mostly in German, if you don't sprechen Deutsch then use the translation tool on google to see what's said about each. My tyres have good prices, just bear in mind not all reviews about them are favourable. A good site to see what's available though. FWIW I have the same tyres on my Superb 4x4 and I would take some convincing to change to something else. For all the reasons you mention but mainly softish compound=good all weather grip. Harder compound= more mileage but less grip.

I found on my Octavia that Michelin Primacy Tyres had a good life (30K+) with motorway driving.

I am going to try Michelin Pilot sport 3's when the stock tyres need replacing on my Superb

Vredestein Cento on mine now. Contis from new lasted 12000 miles. Have 8000 on the Vredesteins, not yet half worn to front. Have used lots of Vredesteins over the years with good results.

Have you done a back to front swap half way through? I find with 4x4 they get more even wear, therefore more life.

on my 2WD, I managed 18K on the front and 33K on the back before the original tyres needed changing. Now on 39K miles, the fronts are still going strong, they are cheap Event brand tyres. I bought them as a short term tyre when short on cash but they have turned out to be not bad at all.

I have had the same problem with my vehicle (140 bhp 4x4) which came fitted with continental contisport 2's (225/40/18). I have now done 13000 km including a lot of highway driving over alpine passes and the front tyres are down to their wear bars and aren't far off replacement. The wear on the rears is nowhere near as bad.

I completely agree that around 15000 km out of a set of tyres is unacceptable, particularly when you consider how expensive they are to replace. The reviews I've read about the contisport 3 suggest they may be an improvement over the contisport 2, and they are highly rated for overall performance. However I am inclined to go with michelins or maybe bridgestone potenzas when I do replace the tyres.

By the way, performance of the contisport 2's in snow was rubbish, which you would expect for a low profile summer tyre.

I've got around 16,000 miles on my Conti's now - and they will be being changed when i put my winters on... there's about 2.5mm left on them, so will see me another thousand or so miles. - they were swopped front to back last winter, when changed for winter tyres... so, expecting 18k (miles) on the set of 4... it's not brill.

I've found the Conti's that it came with to be too soft (about 18K) and opted for Michelins on my VRS (about 28K), I've had a set of Pirellis too, in between, but they were too soft and only lasted about 20K (miles).

In relation to this, on my previous car, a MkV Golf Gti,I was getting about 16,000kms out of the Conti's as well. That seems to be about the life expectancy of them. I switched to Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric's after reading alot of tyre reviews and these were highly recommended. The life of these for me was a little better around 22,000kms.

Hi

I have the 170 2WD estate - I have those exact tyres and I got 8000 miles out of my first set on the front, and 17000 out of the rears.

Pretty terrible. My driving is mainly on twisty uphill and downhill roads of average condition. No particularly excessive driving.

My second set (which were 3's) on the front gave me about 10000 miles, so the 3's lasted longer.
