Just where does the rattling come from in 1.2 TSI?

Featured Replies

Air intake pipe where it joins right at the front of the car. Mine hasn't done it for a while now and I haven't done any mods to it to fix it. Maybe it's due to higher air temps.

Any pics? And what to do to sort it exactly?

I noticed that the sound frequently appears on higher air humidity levels. Been told that it is produced by the lame fixed fuel lines.

Yes Uros, from other forum the diagnosis seems to be that it is the fuel lines knocking in the chassis rails....

Well, my Roomster (1.2Tsi) has a little bag in fuel lines "pocket" as shown below

The same annoying sound behind my glove box (left handed drive) or behind your dashboard exist in all VAG 1.2Tsi engines. The solution is a kind of foamy thing (like mine) in the pocket to make fuel pipes more stable and in addition the a/c pipe at the left side of the car, as we see it from the front having the bonnet open, touches the chassis as she vibrates producing that sound, like old sawing machine (Singer) . Look carefully, in the second foto the pipe is marked.

Both fotos are from Greek VWPolo Club.

Was there any suggestion on how to stop the a/c pipe vibrating?

Yes, sorry for not mention it, mechanic should use something to "isolate" it, like foamy wrap or tie wrap to extend the distance between pipe an chassis or something like that.

And please let me make a correction, the marked pipe is a fuel pipe and not a/c pipe as i wrote in my previous post.

Many thanks for your pics stratosg. I have the foamy "bag" too- but it doesn't seem to help! Do you know where exactly the foam should be inserted to stop the A/C pipe vibrating?

I had a similar rattle on my V6 Superb Estate. It only did it on idle and would go with the slightest bit of throttle. At first I thought it was coming from the dashboard but then I was sure it was coming from underneath the car. ..underneath the drivers seat. My supplying dealer couldn't fix it at all. I took it into another dealer and they sorted it within 3 hours. It was a duff bracket holding the fuel lines underneath the drivers seat. There's some sort of service bulletin on it. They replaced the bracket and stuck a foam wedge between the fuel lines. They actually had the bits in stock. It's been really quiet since but while it was rattling it drove me round the bl&&dy bend

I think the solution is the soft black plastic ring that holds the pipe, as shown because the photo is taken after the car was fixed. If you look very carefully you will see that in the very first photo (from my Roomster) you will see the same pipe almost attached to the chassis with a while plastic wrap. At polo that wrap is missing.

After 13 months and 21,128 Km I haven't fix this noise yet, cause i think it's a special characteristic of the car, annoying but still special, plus i am fan of the theory that says "Don't fix it if it works".

@RedDog

A friend of mine had the same solution as you at his 1.8Tsi Superb.

Thanks- I'll possibly have to live with it, I just don't fancy dealers making things worse...!

This may be Adam260, one of many issues with his monte? The rattle he has in the dash

Diesels always rattle anyways!

Seriously I'm ok with it as long as it doesn't cause any issues!

It's the same one that mine does... sometimes :S It's not in the dash itself, it's resonating from the engine bay. I've had it ages and it hasn't caused any problems. It's a characteristic, but one that can be cured fairly easily.

What sell it!! ;)

Well,to sum it up, where does it come from? The fuel lines, the air intake pipe or the brake lines? Or something fourth?

I have fixed the fuel line shown on the picture above and the rattling continued, so it is not that.

Only the fuel lines pocket, like stratosg says.

3 times it has gone back to a dealer and since yesterday it's back AGAIN. Fed up of this!

Had the air induction pipe rattle on my sons Fabia I. The Fabia II uses a similar arrangement so maybe worth a look. Wrapped some tape around the male fitting to stop it chattering against the female :giggle:

6180037145_e2855db46a_z.jpg

Also had a number of peculiar noises come and go from the dash/engine bay of the wife's Fabia II TSI 85 but the current more persistant ones are in the front doors, unfortunatly our local garage must employ deaf staff as they say there not there :giggle:

Don't suppose the shocking road surfaces round here help or the daft standard fit 205/45 WR16 tyres :S

Hope you get to the bottom of it,

TP

DOes everyone with the 1.2 tsi have the rattles or do some drive rattle free?

My wife's Fabia 1.2TSI is completely rattle free.............so far!

Mine fabia combi 1.2 tsi DSG (2012) is also rattle free :)

Mine is rattle free now since i fixed the pipe that was causing the rattle by vibrating and touching the chassis.
