The 1.4 TSi. How do you "describe it"

Featured Replies

I was trying to explain to some friends why my cars engine is so powerful for being so small. Most of them are not into cars at all, so its a bit off putting rambling on about why the TSi is good because of the twin charged super charger and turbo charger working together to reduce lag.

So I decided to say its pretty much a twin turbo, which they seem to get. Some didn't get that, so had to kinda explain even more. :giggle:

Would you say the vRS is a twin turbo or what?

I believe "twincharged" is the phrase ;)

It has a supercharged and a turbocharger. One for low revs, one for higher revs.

Won the International Engine of the Year several years running, still is king.

What we want know is a twin charge version of the 1.2TSI with about 160 hp, that would be good.

Only problem is the need of 98 Octane fuel which makes it a bit more expensive.

That would be pointless with the 1.4 180

People are like wtf does that mean?! Hence twin turbo, since the supercharger is almost a turbo you could kinda count it as one

That would be pointless with the 1.4 180

The point would be 4 or 5 mpg better which the 1.2 seems to exhibit over the 1.4 versions plus possibly higher rev ceiling for the shorter stroke version to state the first two things that come to mind.

I would call it obsolete bit of a White elephant, until they make a diesel one 1.6 crtdi twin turbo charged!! ;)

what you want to do i take them out in a mapped one. all the responses you get are **** off is that a 1.4, no way. or thats ******* unbelievable for a 1.4. Its hilarious

A very clever idea to reduce lag

Bmw have now copied with the new m3

Being a triple charged, two turbos and one supercharger

Mmmmmmm

A proper vrs the way god intended! DIESEL ;)

lol... but its correct. there are two seperate forced induction systems,(a supercharger and a turbocharger) two = twin supercharger/turbocharge = charger, hence twincharger, the way VAG refer to it!) to say twin turbo is basically wrong ;) it has 1 turbo.

I wouldn't let other peoples ignorance dictate how you describe it! lol... if they don't posess the intelligence to understand, talk to them about big brother or sopmething ;):giggle:

edit: please don't take offence, none is intended.

Twin-turbo is basicly wrong, but people usually don't understand the term "twincharged" this way, it's easier for people to understand with twin-turbo.

And VWAG refer to it as Bi-TSI since there is TSI-engines with only Turbo ;).

And what we want is the 1.6 TSI engine with variable turbo-gemotry that we've heard rumors off!

Or even better, the 2.0... *droool*

It wouldnt with 160 lol

Just say it's like a normal turbo engine, with the extra bit that Mad Max had poking through his bonnet. :)

now thats a description!

I will be describing mine as a 'supercharged turbo' when i get it later this year.

People know turbo's are quick, but add supercharged infront of turbo and they can't seem to comprehend just how rapid that is for a 1.4!

Lets not forget this is nothing new Ford had 1.4 litre engines running 2 turbos and producing over 380hp in the late 70's , those things were rapid for a 1.4, 180hp is still a long way off.

Twincharged kits have been around for a while on the jap modified scene certainly 10 years or so and the Mini has a well regarded conversion which gets up to 400hp or thereabouts

Tell it like it is!

I just say twincharged - turbo and supercharger

I would call it obsolete bit of a White elephant, until they make a diesel one 1.6 crtdi twin turbo charged!! ;)

White elephant? A multi award winning engine? Really? I'll be saying twincharged or turbo supercharged

Nothing but worries, I love the little pocket rocket but the combination of small engine twin charged and the dsg is an

issue, when the 1.6 eventually comes to skoda it will be a big leap forward, although by then vag will have bought out another set up that will trounce that!, so same old story skoda always the last to get up onto the next rung of the ladder :( but let's not forget the VRS should be a DIESEL no ifs no buts we all know that! It's just a GTI not a VRS,

I'm not saying I don't like the " Sudo" VRS I do I would love to have one ( missus wouldn't let me have one) I however know that the Diesel one would have been on the cards!, if you have a problem explaining what to call it, describe it as a " JET PROPELLED POCKET ROCKET!!!"

Pointless worrying about things it gets you nowhere. Yes it's a complicated engine but it's not as bad as people are making out. DSG is tried and tested and if it's good enough for a Nissan GTR and other cars in the VAG group it's good enough for me. It's luck of the draw with any engine if it breaks or not. Technology wise Skoda have most things from the VW at about the same time for example the 3.6 V6 engine in the Superb and Passat R36. They had the Polo platform before VW in the Fabia.

As for a vRS only being diesel I disagree. Diesel is fine if you do big miles but because of the DPF it's not so good if you only do short trips and I know plenty of hot hatches that do less than 20k a year. Mine will be doing less than 10k.

Wish I was doing less than 10K a year :)

Still shaping up for 12-14K per annum despite only having a very small work commute.

:D

That's 10k at the moment in my own car. I regularly drive my parents car so it's probably nearer 15k. Can see it being more when the new car arrives just because I'll be having fun with it

Had mine 6 months. Have done 4.5k. Im off ro kenya next week for 2 months and the middle east next year for 7 months. Im xpecting no more than 7k for my first 1.5 years
