My Almost New Yeti 170 - thanks to this Forum

Featured Replies

Looking through the Forum about three weeks ago, a kind contributor had listed about 17 used Yetis that were available through the Skoda used car sales. The first on the list was a fully loaded 170 Elegance with a mere 2620 miles on the clock. Spoke to the dealer - they had supplied the car when it was new in March 2010 - asked for a towbar to be fitted (13pin with split charging) - and the rest is history. Wife and me jumped on the early morning flight from Aberdeen to Luton and then by road to Walthamstow where we were expected by the fantastic team at Transcity Skoda. Nothing was too much trouble for these guys - a real family business just like the Customer Service that you dream of! Our sincere thanks to them.

Anyway, paperwork completed, into the early evening rush hour and, thanks to the Columbus Sat Nav, we were in Portsmouth in no time. The following day it was off to Bournemouth to see the Air Festival, then a rest day before the drive back to Aberdeenshire. We have done the Pompey/Aberdeenshire trip many times in our faithful Octavia L&K that we had from new (2004), so we were able to do some instant comparisons. To be honest, there isn't many comparisons! The Yeti is in a different class, even more comfortable, quiet and surprisingly frugal for a 'tight' engine, returning 46.1mpg for the 620 mile trip at speeds between 60-80 mph indicated. We cannot fault this motor - we were going to order a new Yeti in February 2012, but this was an offer not to be missed. As yet, I haven't towed the caravan, but have plugged in the electrics to confirm that it all works.

It goes to prove that there are some good deals to be had out there, and with almost £3500 worth of goodies on the car, Christmas has come early. For all of you guys/girls waiting for your new 170 Yeti, you will not be disappointed!

Congratulations!

My 170 is due in March ... will be interested to know how you get on towing with it.

Oh and you live in my favourite part of the country .... our summer tour always includes the wonderful Silverbank Caravan Club site in Banchory and the not so wonderful council site in Fraserburgh!

Congratulations and welcome .....you took your time with your 1st post :giggle:

I hope they coded the towbar correctly (as many dealers struggle to be able to do that) if the reversing sensors are not isolated when the electrics are plugged into the car then save yourself a load of hassle and get someone local to you up there who has VCDS to code it for you, don't waste your time trying a dealer (probably many times).

That could have been one of my posts; apologies for making you lighter in the pocket :giggle: but very pleased to hear you found your perfect Monster B)

Regards,

TP

Great news - another Yeti in Aberdeen. They are becoming more visible !

I tow a Bailey Monarch, Series 6, which the Octy managed well, although you were always aware of the overhang which caused some concern in strong winds. I reckon the towcar/caravan ratio will be down to 81% which should produce the perfect combination - especially with little overhang on the Yeti and an extra 40bhp on tap!

I currently tow a Swift Jura which is the same layout as the Monarch, have towed it with two different Octy vRS models and never had a moments worry with it. I think you are right though the short rear overhang should make it even more stable ... however by the time the Yeti arrives we will be towing a 2012 Sterling Cruach Benmore which is longer and heavier, though well within the Yeti's capabilities.

I have ALKO ATC electronic stability gubbins on the current 'van (and it comes as standard on the new one) so any tendancy for the 'van to do its own thing should be corrected without me even being aware of it.

We tow a horse trailer with ours and it's very stable (due to the short rear overhang) and obviously the 170 diesel has no difficulty in pulling a 950kg trailer with 400kg horse on board. Obviously fuel consumption suffers, but all in all it makes a good towing car.

How right you were. First time I plugged the caravan in, the rear parking sensors continued to sound. Despite asking the dealer to do the coding when they fitted the towbar - they hadn't.

Anyway, took it to my local dealer yesterday - he knew what he was doing and even let me watch him programming the computer. Only took a few minutes. Now have the caravan picture on the sat nav screen when I select reverse - and no sensor sounding!

Just need the rain to stop in north east Scotland and we can then actually use the caravan again!

If you dont mind saying , did you pay over list , It seems some sellers are asking a premium due to the waiting time .

I'd sell the caravan and buy a boat if I were you, at least if this weekend is anything to go by, so much for summer finally arriving in September! :'(

No, I paid £22000, for a car that had done 2621 miles, was fully loaded with columbus sat nav, panoramic sunroof, 12 speakers sound system, silver roof rails, rough road package, variable boot floor (no spare), floor mats, complete netting system & boot bag, detachable towbar, mud flaps and finished in black magic metallic. I reckon I did very well. Car has averaged 45.1mpg since picking it up on 18 August and running some 1100 miles. Very pleased - indeed, I have been unable to fault it in any respect.
