1.4TSI turbo 120.5bhp (122ps)

Featured Replies

Lo everyone, here's a thing! In spite of my best efforts to get her to buy a Skoda like the rest of my neighbours have done, my neighbour has just bought the new VW Golf with the 1.4TSI Turbo only engine in. Got to say it's brilliant. Aside from the 122ps it puts out it has 200nm of torque at just 1500rpm. With DSG is manages 56mpg (once run in with a feather foot on the loud pedal). But with a 0-60 time of 9.8 seconds it's doubtful if anyone will find their shoes filled with feathers, as, although that's not super quick, it's an entertaining amount of power.

Now, I don't know if any of you can shed light on this, but some 6 months ago I was at my local Skoda dealer and noticed a Fabia Hatchback sport with a 1.4TSI engine in it. This was a new showroom car and it was labelled as putting out 122ps and I'm sure it was a turbo only engine and certainly wasn't supercharged. This got me confused at the time (I would point out I am normally in a state of confusion about most things in life!!) as I didn't think this engine was available in the Fabia. I haven't seen reference to it anywhere else since. So what gives. A Fabia with the 1.4TSI engine in would be something else...122ps is about right for me! Anyone...got any news?

They don't do it and neither do the VW in the Polo. I think that it would take sales off the GTI and the VRS as dumb people will see 1.4TSI and think it is the same when in fact it is missing a supercharger and nearly 60BHP!

Get a 1.2TSI and chip it!

May have been just a 1.4 16v jobby so no turbo or supercharger. As above, they weren't going to use that engine, only in the Octavia, Yeti I think.

Well this is interesting. It wasn't the old 1.4, and I'm sure it was the 1.4TSI. It was finished in white and was a Special Edition sport with the 122ps engine. I remember reading the spec sheet and seeing 1.4TSI. It wasn't the Vrs version. It isn't listed on the Skoda site but I'm wondering if they made just a few to see how quick they went out of the showroom. Not all dealers would get them either. This happens occasionally in the trade I know as a bit of a marketing trial. It 's not problem to do, as the engine is in loads of other Skoda's and VW's with just a turbo and no Supercharger. But I'm just keen to know if anyone else has seen this model or has one, if it exists! Thanks for the comments though, I'm puzzled at the mo.

i thought TSI stood for T urbo S upercharged I njection if there is no supercharger it would be a TI or no turbo but a supercharge it would be SI or none then it would be I ????????:S

I highly doubt this - how would you insure it? It wouldn't be on any database.....

TSI stands for turbocharged stratified injection

TSI engines can be turbocharged and not supercharged. I doubt they would do a limited run as described. They would need to update documentation/ do the mpg tests etc. I can also imagine insuring a one off special would be a nightmate.

Best way to see if iit exists is to look in the manual of a new car. The tech spec section will have all possible variants listed.

TSI can be both - Fabia VRS is and also the 140, 160 and 170 BHP variants of the engine.

It would be nice if they did put the 1.4 (120) in the Fabia, though I dont know what the price would be. If it was too close to the vRS, it wouldn't sell.

I would have one if they do it though :)

Yep Mike, that's my thoughts too at the moment. It could be quite a bit cheaper as well. It's the supercharger gubins that really escalates the price as there's loads of clutter that goes with it.

JRW, you make some interesting points especially about the insurance. I'm looking into the special edition label I saw on the showroom one, I'll speak to my dealer tomorrow. But I know that a company has to make a certain number of them to qualify for normal road use insurance (usually at least 500 units or above and these can be sold over several countries) so they can be accepted as a normal car and go on the database, and the mpg tests are really cheap and easy to do so it's possible.

I'll certainly take the neighbours Golf for a spin once it's here and I'll let you know how it goes if anyone is interested. But again, it would be nice to get a Fabia with this engine in it. I suspect 0-60 in 8.9 would be achievable if the Golf is doing it in 9.8. emoticon-0144-nod.gif

0-60 in 9.8 secs is not entertainment, it's travel.

Tony ;)

Compared to yours...yes! Compared to my estate it's ballistic!! emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

Well at least you've got a chance of arriving at your destination! ;) the DSG might have other ideas ;)

Did you find out from the dealer if this was ' a special' ?

Thanks.

Well guys, there is no trace of the "Special" motor that I must have "imagined" I saw in the dealers. I spoke with the sales manager who tells me it was the Vrs! But it cleary said 122ps on the sales ticket, and 1.4TSI engine and the word Sport was in there somewhere. So I can only think it was a typo on the ticket or he just didn't recall the special I'm talking about. You see it didn't have the Vrs wheels, or paint scheme either and it stood very tall of the ground like the Sport model, not a Vrs. So I'm more con-fuddled than ever. Since it isn't listed anywhere it's obvious, and the most likely explanation, that I must have gone through some sort of time dimensional porthole into another reality (this wouldn't be the first time it's happened!!! emoticon-0144-nod.gif) where they have seen the sense of making such a motor with the 'just Turbo' motor in it.

On another note, my neighbour has taken delivery of her brand new TSI 1.4 Golf. It's a superbly finished motor in black until you open up the rear hatch and see all the dents in the underside of the metal panel surrounding the hatch. It looks as though something has been trapped in the door as someone has slammed it down. There are stone chips too in certain areas. Quite surprising you might imagine for a new motor from a prestige dealer. She said the dealer is looking into it. She has said he better do more than that! She's a good girl, she knows her rights and has rejected cars for less in the past.
