Tyres- Another one!

Featured Replies

I have Bridgestones on...... they're carp

Well, maybe that's a bit strong. In normal driving they are fine, but when you press on a bit they just give up. Even worse in the wet. Not keen on them at all. They'd better last a long time because they don't exactly have loads of grip.

They are as bad as the Michelin Primacys that were supplied on my Mk1 vRS. I could get wheelspin in the wet in 3rd gear. Replaced them with Toyo T1-R's and suddenly I couldn't spin the wheels in the wet anymore :)

I've had the Toyos on 2 cars and they've been great. I would have no hesitation about putting them on again, I think they are a very good fast road tyre in both wet and dry. They aren't a good track tyre though, everyone seems consistent in that view, but then the best track tyre is a semi-slick :)

remeber yours are the tuaranzas Mike ;) which are, by all accounts crap, but the RE050A's are really good, stunning dry grip great wet grip, (a little trouble with standidng water) but basically good tyres, were OE on my fiat :)

EDIT: I should mention I'm after 2 new front tyres, my back tyres are two original continentals that have done 26,000 miles and still have 3mm of tread!

Point to remember its advised to replace tyres when they there 6 years old. Might be worth puting the new ones on the back and getting that last bit of life out the originals on the front.

Tend to swap my tyres about annually but I have started to change between summers and winters anyway.

6 years old!! is that advice strictly for tank drivers? What kind of tyre lasts six year?

I assume the front's got the most wear? is it in-fact the rears then?

Those contis are about 2.5 years old btw, but they'll do another couple of months :)

This is an interesting thread :)

Just to add some points to those already made. Probably the worst tyres I have ever owned where Pirelli P6000s. These are horribly dangerous and I don't know how such a big brand can make such awful tyres. I had a 180bhp 1.8T Leon previously and almost wrote it off on these tyres. They were quickly replaced with Goodyear Eagle F1s which I cannot fault apart from the soft compound and very fast wear.

I have also used Falken FK452s which can usually be picked up quite cheaply on camskill, I was surprised with these tyres, they were much better than I thought they would be.

Most recently I also had Nankang NS2s on my Fabia I VRS and was quite impressed for such a cheap tyre. In the dry they are **OK**, however in the wet they are a bit crap.

Looking forward to trying some Rainsport 2s when these factory Contis wear out on my Fabia II VRS :D, have only ever heard great things about the Uniroyal Rainsports.

There's Conti's on the vRS at the moment. Seem OK in the dry and not bad in the wet but haven't really pushed them. They do tramline a bit on one road in particular. Think it's more down to the road but I've had several types of tyres and some are better than others. Before I traded in my last vRS I had Pirelli P Zero Neros and took the car for a blast up to North Wales and back. They felt awesome all the way and the car felt spot on too and seemed to give me more confidence the further I went. Tempted to get another set of them when the time comes.

My review of the Rainsport's isn't going to be too complimentary. I've done 300 miles on them so far so going to wait till I've done 500-600 miles then give my opinion....:wonder:

another member was disappointed with Uniroyal Rain Expert's.

I am lucky living not living in a hilly area and my basic journeys are on primary routes but if I find my factory fit Bridgestone's too lacking in the winter I will swap them. I was considering Uniroyal's but now will look at something different - Avon ZZ3 with a similar tread pattern are one I would shortlist.

Has anybody got these fitted?

I have used ZZ3's and the grip is good in all conditions, no problem with that (I had them on the mark I vRS fabia) but there was an odd vibration that I thought was wheel bearings, and the garage said all was perfect, so by definition had to be the tyres, had them off and inspected... there was a crack between the tyre wall and the tread, on the INSIDE, completely unable to tell from outside..... never had them since, though they did grip well...

Been reading the Auto Express winter tyre test and thinking about a set of ContiWinterContact TS830 P's. When I checked on the net I couldn't find any sites selling them for 205/40R17's. In fact all the winter tyres seemed to be no name cheapo brands in that size. Anyone had more luck finding some decent ones without swapping to 15 inch wheels?

I'm pleased to hear you found the ZZ3's to be a good all round tyre.

A colleague at work has them on his Focus 2.0 TDi and has been happy with them. Previously he had Vredestein's, Ultrac I think, that were good when new but particularly on the rear did not wear evenly creating a vibration on the motorway - he thought a wheel bearing was on the way out. The factory fit tyres he had were Pirelli and he hated them for tram-lining. I'm not sure which type but not P6000 as he described a design with continual bands which is why he went for the Vred's then ZZ3's.

The crack you had is a little concerning but I would like to think a one-off. Did you contact Avon as I would have done?

no, they were down to about 3 mill, and replacement "value" in these circumstances (as I'm sure they would pay) means I would get little back, so didn't bother....

haven't heard anything bad about Vredestein's, never used them, but all I have read and heard is good....

I have maxxiss Victras at the moment, brilliant summer tyre, cant recommend enough... not for winter driving though, car is in for its 20k service imminently, winters going on until april :)
