Wifi help

Featured Replies

Virgin have just put a new modem in, and now my wifi won't work! (typical!)

It works fine off the cable on the pc but my wifi devices just won't connect. Any clues as to what I need to do?(laymans terms please!!! Lol)

Thanks

Would help to tell us what router you have?

In a nutshell you need to plug a Ethernet cable from the modem to the router. Switch the router on first and then switch on the modem. Hopefully this will work. If not it gets more complicated as you need to spoof the mac address of the modem to the router.

If the modem is combined.WiFi as well, then the code and network name will be different to the replaced box.

There should be a sticker on it with all this info, or should have come with a card with it on.

I have Virgin WiFi

Yes, sorry, I am a moron!! It's a sitecom router attached to the modem the virgin provided. I don't know what model off hand (if this matters?) .....

Back again, still not sorted. On closer inspection there is a username as password etc on the 'hub' thing they have installeed. I have been into the admin settings on my pc and set it up with a name and passcode thing, but my phone can't even find it :S

I don't know if it's still going through my old router or if it has it's own. My last one was ancient and I assumed they'd just change that and it would continue to run through my usual wifi thing with same password etc from the router, but apparently not. I don't know what to do :(

The ether cable still runs from the virgin modem to my sitecom router (WL-534 v1 uk 001) but no joy....

My phone can still see my old wifi name, but when you try to use it there is just no connection.

Hey with virgin routers they come with the wifi turn off you have to go into the setting and manually turn it on you should then get a flasking light on the router/modem above the wifi picture

Hope that makes sence

I've no idea tbh, I wasn't here when they put it in. It might be, I have wondered that, but you would think they'd have the sense to not then connect it to ANOTHER router?! Even if that is the case, I don't know what to do

On a device you've forgotten the network on, can you see the WiFi with the same name or has it now gone?

You need to go through things step by step.

So just to be clear, your old router is turned off and not connected in any way and you now have a new router. All devices tend to remember settings for wireless networks they have connected to (even if the networks are no longer available).

The username and password on your new router will be the defaults to login and configure the router. This includes setting up the wireless network. If you know the settings for you old wireless network, the SSID (e.g. MYWIFI) and access control (e.g. WEP) with the password or key you can just configure your new router with these and all of your devices will reconnect with no problem. If you do not know your old settings you will have to configure the router and then tell all of the devices you wish to use with it what the new WIFI settings are.
