Frankfurt 2011

Is this new or old news?

Extract from Skoda UK media report:

The design concept is dominated by clearly defined, precise shapes created with great care and attention to detail. As the focus is on the clarity of design, this vehicle symbolizes the brand’s authentic position. The harmony of proportions, well-executed distribution of surfaces and edges, and light and shadow play also lend the car attractiveness, dynamism and excellence. The new logo presented in the design concept, which will adorn new models as of 2012, has a clearer structure and gives a more valuable impression. With the distinctive logo, the newly shaped grille and the quatrefoil shape of the four headlamps, the distinctive design is all the more pronounced at the front of the car. The rear portion of the design concept is unmistakable thanks to the new logo and the even more striking arrangement of the C-shaped rear lamps.

Could someone please translate this into English I can understand?

Andy

It might also help if we had a picture of the car they're talking about.

I suspect it's this...

Vision D concept

Still gobbledegook though :giggle:

Old news, this car was at Geneva in March.

Should see something very soon about an actual new car though to be presented at Frankfurt later this month!

Interesting face, I can not work out yet if I like it or not. I suspect it could go either way. If this is going to be the new face for the brand will it transfer across to the Yeti at some point or would it simply not suit the Yeti shape?

I'd expect the facelifted Yeti to get the new logo, with the same style grille sunken down to fit around the logo.

Looks like an updated version of the original Joyster concept.

The Vision D was in Geneva yes BUT this is the baby Octavia concept for Frankfurt (it is a smaller car that will sit between the Fabia and Octavia rumoured to be called the Felicia):

If you can mentally strech that front view to Yeti proportion, then it could be tres elegant!

Moving the DRL's down to where they are on most other cars and adding the fogs into the headlight assembly would remove the frog's eye aspect of the Yeti from the front.

Not enough to make an upgrade move, but certainly enough to make the current version more of a cult item :)

I disagree. I think the Rolls Royce fog lamps are one of the Yeti's most distinctive elements! Take that away and you just have a bland box on wheels! I don't mind the fogs becoming just fogs and the DRLs going LED inside the main lights but the frog eye look should stay in my book!

Here are some quick mashups I did!

That makes it look like any other bland euro box.......like a facelifted Fiat Multipla!emoticon-0106-crying.gif

I know...... but I'm not good at doing things like this! hehehe Was just to give a flavour and in the process I created Frankenstein!

Some more follow-up info on the concept car, broadly re Frankfurt and the Skoda roadmap in general at:

Interested in the line 'Vahland also says the production version of MissionL will be followed be a new model every six months for up to the next three years.' It's unclear whether this refers specifically to the MissionL vehicle or new Skoda models in general, but if the latter then it might indicate that we could see a Yeti FL within 3 years.

No he is referring to the whole Škoda range. The first new Škoda will be the baby one based on the VW Up! See this thread I started a while ago:

Some info on the Yeti from Frankfurt. Please keep in mind this is an international press release and might not apply to UK versions! Only big news seems to be 140BHP Greentec 2wd version:

When it debuted in 2009, the Yeti expanded ŠKODA’s model portfolio and is a friendly representative of the young compact SUV segment. At the same time, it is equipped to manoeuvre in tough conditions and continues to perform even in places where others fail. Its excellent handling lends it exceptional off-road capability, while on the road it dazzles with its dynamics. The five stars it received in Euro-NCAP crash tests confirm that the Yeti has a sophisticated system of passenger protection.

Yeti is now also offered in a special edition with AllDrive, black and silver 17” Annapurna light alloy wheels and a rough road package. The AllDrive feature is indicated on the door sill plates and badges. The centres of the roof rails are anodised, while the interior is decorated with stainless steel pedal covers and special upholstery on the centre sections of the seats, just like in the Octavia Scout. The new metallic beige Safari paint is restricted exclusively to the AllDrive edition.

The Yeti Family special edition is now also offered with blue seat covers and woven carpet inserts with blue edging.

Even in the SUV class, low fuel consumption is an achievable goal. Equipped with a four-cylinder 1.6 TDI CR 77 kW (105 bhp) engine, the Yeti GreenLine consumes 4.6 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres and has CO2 emissions of 119 g/km. The GreenLine version comes equipped with brake energy recovery, the Start-Stop system, a gear change indicator and low rolling resistance tyres. This version is front-wheel drive only and has a five-speed manual transmission. Green tec, another high fuel economy version, is powered by a 1.4 TSI/90 kW petrol engine or 2.0 TDI CR DPF/103 kW diesel engine, both with six-speed manual transmissions.

Catering to the individualist, four different roof colours are available that contrast with the paint on the rest of the car. The Reef package, which can be specially ordered for the Ambition and Elegance trim versions, includes protective side door strips, two-tone 17” Matterhorn wheels, anodised roof railings and a new decorative strip, “Techno”.

The innovative Amundsen+ navigation system with an optional digital DAB receiver, Bluetooth module for hands-free calling or independent remote-control heating – these are appealing options that are available for the Yeti.

With a ground clearance of 180 millimetres and overall length of 4,223 millimetres, the Yeti offers excellent capability for off-road travel. Assurance of this is also provided by the four-wheel drive and fourth generation Haldex clutch. Its payload capacity starting at 620 kilograms allows for practically limitless use of the Yeti’s 416 to 1,760 litre boot volume. The maximum trailer weight of 2,000 kilograms makes the Yeti a safe, hard-working helper.

Powerful appearance: Design

The Yeti’s strength of character is clearly portrayed by the contours of its body. Its typical off-road design components imply a vehicle able to cope with rough terrain, while wheel sizes up to 17” provide excellent road performance. Lower body protective panels are a classic hallmark of an SUV. The C-pillars concealed under black painted glass and roof rails (which come standard) add to the functional design of this compact SUV.

The rear features clean lines and rear lights that illuminate in the shape of the letter C, as is typical for ŠKODA cars. The vertical tailgate opens easily and high enough so that even tall drivers have no problem standing underneath. The tailgate window extends all the way to the sides, encouraging the impression of a continuous window stretching all the way to the B-pillar. Skid plates in the front and rear underline the Yeti’s off-road character. High headlamps for daytime use and fog lamps enhance the front view.

The VarioFlex seat concept improves versatility and the comfort of travelling in the rear seat. Adapted from the Roomster, VarioFlex provides the Yeti with an interior flexibility that remains unmatched in its category. The three separate rear seats can be individually folded or removed, while the outer seats can slide forwards, backwards and – when the middle seat is removed – sideways by 80 millimetres. This converts the Yeti from a five- to a four-seater, instantly increasing the amount of space in the rear seats.

The Yeti’s engine range includes seven four-cylinder units – three petrol and four diesel engines – that deliver power from 77 kW (105 bhp) to 125 kW (170 bhp). All are turbocharged engines with direct fuel injection, allowing the cars to achieve high efficiency standards. In addition, diesel engines are equipped with particulate matter filters.

Overview of Yeti engines:

Petrol engines:

1.2 TSI/77 kW (front-wheel drive) – six-speed manual transmission / seven-speed DSG transmission

1.4 TSI/90 kW (front-wheel drive) – six-speed manual transmission

1.4 TSI/90 kW (front-wheel drive) – six-speed manual transmission (Green tec, available from Week 45 of 2011)

1.8 TSI/118 kW (4×4) – six-speed manual transmission

Diesel engines:

1.6 TDI CR DPF/77 kW (front-wheel drive) – five-speed manual transmission (GreenLine)

2.0 TDI CR DPF/81 kW (front-wheel drive) – five-speed manual transmission

2.0 TDI CR DPF/81 kW (4×4) – six-speed manual transmission

2.0 TDI CR DPF/103 kW (4×4) – six-speed manual transmission / six-speed DSG transmission

2.0 TDI CR DPF/103 kW (front-wheel drive) – six-speed manual transmission (Green tec, available from Week 45 of 2011)

2.0 TDI CR DPF/125 kW (4×4) – six-speed manual transmission

For off-road driving, the ABS, ASR and EDS assist systems in the Off-Road mode (optional, standard in the Elegance trim version) can be used in four-wheel drive versions. The accelerator pedal is more sensitive, the start-up assistant regulates engine revolutions and the hill ascent assistant is ready to respond quickly. By using sensitive braking, the hill descent assistant keeps the speed of the vehicle constant – regardless of whether the car is in gear. The driver can then fully focus on choosing the best path in rough terrain.

Think that 140 2wd could be a very big seller, going to effect other VAG sales I'm sure, unless VW have put tight quotas on engine supply :wonder:

Probably why its taken over two years to get it into production

It may well be a big seller, But I can't see it affecting VW sales.

Seeing as total Yeti Production was 45,000, and Golf production was 11 times that, at 500,000, I really can't see what the problem is. Even the Octavia only sold 150,000, so for every 1 Yeti there were 3 Octavia's sold and 11 Golfs. (11 badge suckersemoticon-0140-rofl.gif)

Mike, wouldnt it be more likely to take sales away from the Tiguan? Its certainly what I compared it to at the time of purchase.

When I specced up a Tiguan to the spec I had ordered my Yeti, it was £8000 more. Aiming for a different market surely.....emoticon-0136-giggle.gif (those with more money who like badges I suppose.....)

I didn't even look at the competition. After reading all I could find there was only one choice........emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Same here. I did not test drive anything else nor did I even price something else. When a man knows what he wants, he knows. Even if the Yeti was not best in class I'd have gone for it for how it looks and how functional it is. That it has won so many awards is just a bonus!

Nope. Mission L is the first new Skoda - deliveries will begin from spring 2011. Baby-Skoda will follow. As far as I know the Frankfurt concept is 90% reality. I REALLY LIKE IT!
