Buying an Octavia - need advice.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm selling my MK1 Fabia VRS to get a MK2 Octavia vrs...

Now I'm pretty certain on the one I want but it has a few little niggles I wonder if you could help me?

I took it for a test drive on Friday and it had the engine management light on but it seemed to run fine (but maybe it was on reduced power??). Anyway I went back today to just finalise the sale and have another drive in it. Took the keys and tried to start it and it started immediately but cut out about 2 seconds later. Tried this about 4 times and it did the same thing each time. On the maxidot it came up "Engine fault. Contact garage" or something similar then said "Immobiliser active!". It might have said them the other way round but I can't remember.

Anyway so I didn't get to drive it again but I do still want it. The garage say they will sort it out no problem but I'm just wondering what might be causing this? I'm just concerned it will be something serious and they could just cancel the message to get it off the forecourt?

Finally...do you think it may be lowered? It certainly looks lower than standard but it's from a car supermarket so they don't know a massive amount of history of it.

Sorry for the essay and thanks in advance

There are plenty of better examples out there, the fact they are trying to sell a non runner suggests the garage arn't much good. I'd walk away for sure.

Alarm bells, walk away, plenty more out there, maybe if it was at a main dealer but a supermarket, at least you would want a printout of the problem with vag-com before and afterwards, and a full years warranty, not some 1 month nothing covered warranty

Loads of dsg cr diesels out there, and you can colour your own wheels, was it cheap as chips

Dear lord, run a mile!

There are plenty of other vRS's out there! I can point you to a good one (My old one) if you are after a blue one... 10 plater..

Looks lowered to me. Its a 59 so would still be under manufacturer warranty anyway should the fault return.

It could be remapped due to the fact its lowered and wheel colour changed which could possibly cause ecu/engine faults if not done correctly.

If it is a petrol, unless you are getting a very good price I would walk away as there are plenty more out there to be had.

Lowered without a doubt, makes you wonder what else it's had done (that you'll be obligated to tell your insurance company about!).

Like the wheels though, wonder if they will do a swap for mine??

Walk away.

Its not as though these are rare.........

Don't be a troll, you've joined today because you have a problem. Like most things on the internet, people only write when things go wrong. I'm hardly going to put a post up saying my turbo is fine am I?

I have a bora with 90k on and my mate a polo with 120k and are both 130 pd engines with no problems whatsoever. Shall I create a thread for that too?

Thanks for all your replies guys.

I can definitely see where you are coming from with walking away but I have to say the condition of the car interior and exterior I thought was very good so don't think it's been abused..

It's £15.5k and they've offered £5.8k for my Fab.....to be completely honest it was the cheapest MK2 diesel DSG available (yet it still had extras like xenons/reversing sensors/auto pack) so maybe it should have rang alarm bells but I certain shouldn't expect a shed should I?

I think may have to continue my search!

Is DSG a requirement?

Not a requirement but a preference really as I do about 400 miles a week a lot of which is stuck in traffic.

I have an 08 tdi140 with 60k and had no problems with it at all. One guy has a problem and all he can do is be a complete ***** about it.

I sold my Mk1 1.9 TDi a little while back - 155k and still pulling like a good'un (I miss that surge!). So my turbo was fine for 10 years and a lot of miles as well :)

My DSG is a pig in stop/start traffic but not until well heated up...very jerky. The gearchange is perfect when on the move. I've probably been unlucky, but make sure you take a good test drive before purchase.

If its that bad , why do you still have one noted in your profile ?

I will counter that - DEFINATELY buy a Skoda DO NOT run away. - I am on my 5th Skoda , SWMBO has just parted company from Smarts having had 2 & now has a Fabia SE+ & loves it.

Back to Oliverp , Alarm bells ring here with this car, walk away from this particular car & go elsewhere, You will find a decent one around, Many here will say that even if there is a slight concern with even a brand new car, any minor issue will just frustarte you and become a major irritant.

Cheeky I know, but my VRS is for sale if you're after a good one!

2010 VRS TDI DSG with nearly all options.

DO NOT BUY ANY SKODA, RUN AWAY!

Had 15 Skodas (Fabias, Felecia, Octavias and Superbs) and about 15 other cars of different makes Citreon, Ford, Mazda, Minis old and new, Opel, Renaults, Rover and Triumphs.

Best 15 of the above were all the Skodas and the Octavias Mk1 and 2s are amazingly versatile as agreed by most the motoring press.

Spent time with Skoda at Autosport show, Goodwood and with dealer network. Fantastic cars and people and just come back from Prague where they are so proud of their company.

Any second hand car can have a bad history. Buy one with a dealer warranty or new, it is the best car on the market, if you cannot afford a XF, of the last 10 years so say tens of thousands of owners.

Let him runaway and get a renault or fiat then see what great car skodas are when look after
