This is false wisdom. If you read the reports on this basically what happens is you hit the brakes and the back end immediately tries to overtake the front. Dodgy tyres on the back and this means you lose control, good tyres and the back is kept in check. Therefore best tyres should always be on the back.

How often have you braked perfectly straight? With all tracked properly, no alignment issues, and even wear on both sides?

The reason for best on the back is its harder to feel and deal with where as fronts you have direct feedback and ability to correct (turn wheel more or less etc).

Go on a skid pan course and your opinion will change. Or ask one of the advanced instructors in driving techniques forum.

If you brake in a perfectly straight line you will stop eventually. Anything slightly off straight with dodgy tyres on the back and you go straight to the scene of the accident.

oh and if you drive through deep water fast then you're just asking for trouble, worn tyres on not. IRMC

OK, seen the video and it is clear what they recommend. However, page 240 of my Octavia handbook...

"If significantly greater wear is present on the front tyres, we recommend changing the front wheels around with the rear wheels etc etc"

So, Skoda are saying "OK to put worn fronts on the back and move the tyres with the greater tread depth to the front." Presumably they would not have this paragraph in their handbook if they supported the view of keep the greater tread depth on the rear as per the Youtube video?

I have never rotated tyres to balance the wear out.

Not sure why Skoda go against expert advice and put that in manual. Maybe ask them?

Because then if you don't have any non repairable punctures, you end up with four tyres of the same type on the car as they get changed out as a set.

Don't forget that age can really affect the grip levels of a tyre.
