Water injection

Featured Replies

Tomorrow I'm getting my hands on a AEM Water/Methanol Kit. In my case though methanol is something I don't want so the system will run with just nice and simple distilled water.

Excited and scared in the same time. Mind you we have done our homework so it seems we are going the right way. After installation we need to remap and that's it.

I could write for a looooong time explaining the benefits of water injection but here is a much more fun video. This is what I'm talking about:

If water injection was good enough for the Supermarine Spitfire, it must be good.

Cool video, Looking forward to seeing your installation!

Heard about these kits and seen a little bit about them before.

I know it is tried and tested but... Still sounds like witchcraft to me! :giggle:

I understand the science (I think) but would still be worried about spraying water into the engine!?

Will let you know how it goes guys - yeah witchcraft to my ears too when I first heard it but the more I look into it the more I BELIEVE lol.

Plus my mechanic is very keen on installing it so he knows a couple more things than I do.

There are many fail safes to avoid issues that is why I picked the AEM kit.

Am i right in guessing the extra cooling will not release any more power?

Will it just help to smooth out the power delivery with a custom map?

Or is it a bit of both?

Well from what I have gathered through the AEM site, my mechanic and forums is that the car under stress and high temperatures created inside the engine looses power and efficiency. By injecting water you get a much more effective cooling of the chambers of the engine which allows you to claim those loses and further tune the engine higher meaning gain in horsepower.

From Wiki:

In internal combustion engines, water injection, also known as anti-detonant injection, is spraying water into the cylinder or incoming fuel-air mixture to cool the combustion chambers of the engine, allowing for greater compression ratios and largely eliminating the problem of engine knocking (detonation). This effectively increases the octane rating of the fuel, meaning that performance gains can be obtained when used in conjunction with a supercharger, turbocharger, altered spark ignition timing, and other modifications. Increasing the octane rating allows for a higher compression ratio which increases the power output and efficiency of the engine. Depending on the engine, improvements in power and fuel efficiency can also be obtained solely by injecting water.[1] Water injection may also be used to reduce NOx or carbon monoxide emissions.

The best systems I could find was AEM and Aquamis. Aquamis has been around for ages producing quality injection systems but the AEM kit is by far cheaper and does the same thing.

I guess it would allow you to run stage 2, or maybe even 3 without stressing the engine as much as normal.

When I first seen this I though, LOL NITRO!

Does this work on diesel ? Sorry if it's a stupid question ;)

I'm already stage 2 so the injection kit seems a great solution to complete the current setup. I got a thing for the time being with naturally aspirated engines and at the moment I'm having fun with the little Fabia. Turning 7400rpms every now and then puts an "evil" smile on my face. ;)

I will pop to dealers tomorrow regarding engine cover codes

Yes of course it can be fitted in diesel engines.

Actually Volvo used a water injection system for their cars.

Thanks seb

I sunk a Yamaha Superjet Jetski once, got tonnes of water directly into the engine. Can't say it did that much good, in fact it pretty much killed it! Jet skis aside I hear that water injection into an engine is a great way to release the power!

It just came in (except the All Stars hehehe). All's fine and I also bought an in-line filter for a cleaner flow (white small box on the top).

Next week is the week. Stay tuned.

Some of the mkI Fabia crowd are already injecting water or a mix of water/meth on diesel engines.

I looked at the aem kit myself as you got much more for your money that what devils own offered and the kit just looked better. But I have no idea who would install it for me in northern ireland :(

Just an update, the water injection project is on hold as the AEM kit cannot work on naturally aspirated engines  Apparently there is not enough positive pressure in the manifold in order for the sensor and flow cpu to work making these kits only good for turbo engines. The system can be bypassed but you loose functionality like progressive flow and at the end you can do more harm than good to the engine.

Looking online apparently there are kits for engines like mine but it needs more work and study as it becomes complex and more of a custom job rather a simple straight forward kit.

Also found out that these are not suitable for TSi engines either so you have been warned.

Thank god I haven't touched the kit so tomorrow I can return it without too much fuss. Fingers crossed.

What an anti-climax. Damn................

Unlucky mate...

Any details on why it is not suitable for TSi?

Is it because its twincharged?

  • Author

Need to understand too but it has to do with the direct injection used in tsi engines. I will defo get more info and post more details.

I find it funny that people have gotten their eyes up for water-injection nowadays...

I remember my first SAAB 900 T8 that I owned with a waterinjection-kit, it had it installed from factory!

I'll still go for a proper intercooler for my vRS tho, a much more stable, easier and efficient solution.

What happened with this then?

Work collegue of mine had a 400bhp Scooby Type RA when I had my 260bhp Series Mcrae.

He had water injection into the cylinders and auto/manual water spray onto the intercooler. As well as a nice anti-lag system

As far as I remember he could run more boost whithout pre-det issues. He had a live knock display on the dash and the water injection certainly made a difference.

The whole car was mental, the RA had light weight components, lower kerb weight, adjustable centre diff, competition steering rack and gearing for a maximum speed of 116mph.

Anyway I'd think the benifits of water injection on a NA car would be quite minimal for the cost.

Cheers
