Replacing laptop screen

Featured Replies

Hi

Screen on my Dell Inspiron has finally gone and broke :( Flickering and going really dark. The computer part of it is working fine still and I would rather not bin it. Any tips on where to and how to replace the screen? Seen a couple of youtube videos and it looks pretty simple.

Cheers, Kev

I've recently got my daughters Sony VAIO laptop screen replaced, I used this company, they collect, repair and deliver it back within 3-4 days - cost me £94 all in, well worth it IMHO

Look on the dell website and you should be able to find the service manual for the laptop, then sally forth to the mighty bay of E and try and find a replacement.

The service manual should be available on line and to download as a pdf.

At a guess you will need to remove the keyboard and the trim immediately above it, then disconnect the cable going to the screen and the aerial(s) for the wireless, remove a couple of long screws from the base and the whole lid should come off. Splitting the lid to remove the screen will likely involve undoing an series of clip and/or screws.

If the laptop was designed by someone unhelpful you find you have to get to the wireless card to undo the aerial which may be hidden on the underside of the laptop - the service manuals are pretty thorough though.

One tip - keep all of the tiny screws separate so you can put them back in the right place, and don't try doing it in a room with a thick carpet!

You may be able to get a complete lid off ebay which will simplify things.

Before you start buying bits, have you tried plugging in an external monitor? It may well also be worth unplugging and reconnecting the cable from the screen to the motherboard (probably under the keyboard) to see if a loose connection is the source of the problem.

Sounds like the inverter might have failed rather than a total screen failure.... might be cheaper to just replace that.

The what now? that the green circuit board type bit at the bottom? I've just had a quick fiddle and the screen comes out easy enough, but if there is a cheaper option i'll give it a whirl :)

EDIT: I see it! £20 for a new one, and not beyond my tinkering skills :)

Good point, if there doesn't appear to be any damage to the screen then the inverter is probably the cause, especially if you can still dimly make out the image on the screen.

Did you check to see if it will output to an external monitor? That way at least you can rule the video circuit before you start spending on components?

If you need a hand with this Kev - Let me know.
