Smart TV

Featured Replies

Looking to purchase a 'Smart' TV soon and visited the local Dixons/Curry's/Comet crew to see what brings.

Think the 'Smart Tv' buzz word started last year as there appears to be quite a few 47-50" heavily discounted all wearing the 'Smart' banner.

One case in point is the LG47LX9900 Which when reviewd in WHFI (09/10) was £2500 and can be had for £799 from Richer.

Has anyone invested and been impressed by the internet capability? Or is it just a passing Fad?

Do think the slim screens look impressive and have to be honest would not have looked at brands like LG before but they appear to have upped there game.

What about passive vs active 3D? The LG latest offering use passive 3D which means you can use the glasses you get from the Cinema instead of paying the extortionate £80 plus per pair.

Then there is still the debate about LCD,LED and Plasma which I dont really want to get into.

So.. any LG fans out there?

Always found LG tv's colours always look washed out.

I bought the LG 42LE4500 about 4 months ago which has since been superseded by a new model.

It's a 42 inch LED.

It doesn't have a browser but does have access to Youtube and loads of other 'channels' which to be honest I haven't used! I've only used the Youtube channel and the DLNA streaming capabilities from my Home Server which do work really really well.

The picture from all sources is absolutely spot on and the only complaint I have is the sound which is terrible due to the constraints of the size of the TV as it's so slim. A surround sound setup is a must.

Didn't go for 3D as I reckon it's a fad

Spot on advice from Dave here. You've got almost exactly the same setup as me except mine is Samsung (as I heard they had a better interface).

Don't invest in Internet TV. I've rarely used it apart from YouTube. It's a bit clumsy trying to navigate by control and there's a lack of 'apps' for Smart TV right now due to differing standards. The major TV manufacturers are sorting that out but it'll be a while.

DLNA is brilliant though as is everything else on it.

I find iPlayer quite useful so bring on YouView.

There is one big issue with thin LED TV's, and thats sound quality. They may have excellent picture quality, but my dads LED samsung sounds no better than a laptop. There is no bass so music and films sound awful. He ended up going out and buying a 2.1 bluray system and now feeds all the audio through that bypassing the TV's poor speakers.

My 42" Panasonic plasma has pretty good sound quality as it at least has some depth for the speakers to work with.

Thanks for you input guys, Have been looking/listening to LG,Sony and Samsung Smart range this weekend and been impressed by the picture quality but less so by the poor almost non existent web interface they proport to have. Sound wont be an issue as the Receiver / 5.1 setup will take care of that. Thing that I wasnt aware of is that the passive 3D isnt 1080p and looks even more blurred than 3D normally does to me. The Philips/Panasonic brigade appear to have slightly better overall picture quality but at the expense of hideous (to me) designed boxes that look like 1st generation flat panel's.

Budget is approx £1k which puts me into the mid range catagory as far as I can see. Still looking!

Cant go wrong with Samsung kit IME

Well...after much deliberation we have just ordered...

Sony KDL 40 NX713. (not a current model as came out last october but comet/coop have them in stock ).

Its just been replaced by the 723 but had all the facilities we wanted. Great picture , fanstastic Monolithic design and all the inputs you could wish for! Does 3D (with adaptor)but not interested in the format .

Originally £1300 but reduced to £699 so happy the man!
