1.3 mpi swap,Reliable?

Featured Replies

i have a felicia with a made in Czech 1.3 carb engine and i have been having trouble with the engine for about a year now and i just can't keep up with that engine it keeps breaking and overheating so iam fed up with it i have two options either sell the whole car OR change the engine with a 1.3 mpi which is made in germany after VW bought skoda and corect me if i am wrong about that engine so i have the following questions:

I KNOW MY ENGINE IS KIND OF NOT FAMOUS AT YOUR COUNTRIES SO I WILL BE TAKING PICTURES SO THAT U CAN COMPARE

1.will i need to change the gearbox? or does my gearbox fit without any adjustments?

2.about the engine mountings are they the same or not as i WILL NOT ADJUST OR ADD OR WELD OR WHATEVER ANYTHING TO THE CHASSIS

3.mine is a carb, new will be injection so ECU is a must so i need the following info?

a. does it break alot?

b.does that need like a professional to handle and install it like

top of the line mechanic? or a not very experienced one can do it?

c. if u can whatever knowledge u have about the ECU system please..?

4.does the 1.3 mpi engine can handle air conditioning and power steering or will that be much of a load at the engine does any models that have the 1.3 mpi have AC or power steering?

5.will i need to do any reinforcements to the chassis like the bar (i don't now it name in english) that connects between the shock absorbers mountings in the engine compartment i know it reinforces the chassis when stronger engine is installed for example?

6. what about the radiator will i have to change it i already have a radiator of the felly that comes with an AC (mine doesn't have any) so it is bigger than my original one in terms of thickness it fits in the same frame but it is about 1.5 times bigger in terms of thickness

7. will i need to change the exhaust?

8.electric wiring and fuse box and all electric stuff what will need changing and/or modifying?

8.what other details should i pay attention to when i am buying the new engine? as in my country shops sell engine with about 1000Km millage or less so like new

now that is everything in my mind that i can remember for now if anybody has more info or hints and tips please advice BECAUSE I AM TOTALLY DEPENDING ON U GUYS if u say it is a straight swap i will do it if u say it will be a hard or too much customization i won't do it and just sell me felly

and just for ur info i go by this order-----------> Reliability (i travel alot on highways i don't want to break where there is nobody to help)

THEN performance

The 1.3 MPi engine wasn't made in Germany, I don't know who told you that. You would probably need the entire wiring loom for the engine bay, along with the ecu. You could keep your existing gearbox, as it is identical. Here in the UK, later MPi models came with standard power steering on most models, but not air conditioning. The bar you refer to is a strut brace, and many later Felicias had this fitted as standard in the UK. The engine mounts are probably slightly different, but should fit straight on with no problems. The right hand side mounting is also the water pump, and if you get a complete MPi engine, it should come complete with it, but may be worth changing before fitting. Converting to power steering will require a new steering column, and steering rack, plus all the pipework and fluid reservoir which attaches to the slam panel. A fairly major job, but I think there has been a thread on this.

By the way, my car (in the UK), is a 1998 1.3 MPi 68 bhp, complete with standard power steering, and the strut brace. It also features twin airbags and electric windows.

Other than obtain an ecu and wiring loom, it you feels adept enough to completely remove and refit your current engine then the mpi engine won't prove anymore difficult...

i wouldn't worry about the strut brace, or aircon, they can be added later if they must.

the power steering is a major job, and unless you are a women you should be able to live with no power steering anyway.

What i would say again though, if you can completely remove and put back in your current engine there is no reason why you wouldn't manage the mpi one.

someone on here might be able to explain what you need to do with the wiring loom as i do not know much about them.

Good Luck

You say overheating?

it would be a shame to rip out the engine when it may only be a thermostat problem. Have you changed the housing and sender unit?? They are a common cause of over heating on the felly.

hi there fitting a mpi to your felicia is easy you will need a engine with loom ecu and imobliser box as mpi has diffrent loom to spi and it plugs in two plugs up by the charcol filter other than that no diffrence and your air con should fit it too as they are the same block i am selling my complete engine 55k gear box hole lot but your in egypt

As is the radiator fan switch, which leads to overheating when stuck in traffic. A carb Felicia will probably have the cast aluminium housing and just need the thermostat bit.

no actually my felly has the plastic housing not the aluminum one but when it melted i bought the aluminum one with its thermostat and i will see the resistance of the original one at different temperatures and customize the new one to give the same readings on the gauge and about the temperature sensor in the radiater is the one resposible for the fan to work or not that i will do my self using an lm35 metal package then a comparator and a potentiometer and a relay but thats after the car gets out of the garage they suck they know nothing sadly i am stuck with them now ... :'(
