Hazard relay clickety click

Featured Replies

A friend of mine has an old 02 Octavia estate. He's got the old clicking hazard problem.

He says if he pulls the hazard switch out of the dash he can feel it clicking. I know this is a common problem, but I can't remember if the switch incorporates the relay or if the relay is separate?

He's been quoted £55 for a replacement from the local motor factor. What's the best place to buy a new replacement?

cheers chaps.

The relay is part of the hazard unit, but this problem could be the stalk. Tiny metal shavings in the stalk make contact and the hazard unit clicks. Try giving the stalk a spray with IPA or switch cleaner.

If he needs a new switch i have one for sale. Works perfectly

I think I'll swap my switch for his, to see if that cures it first. Then we will know if its the relay or the stalk.

Its £35 for the hazard switch from the dealers. Yours might be different due to you having a tow bar. When my hazard switch went it kept on jamming not clicking it does sound more like the indicator switch

My hazard switch recently failed, started clicking slow/fast randomly then stopped clicking all together. cost me £30 from TPS and fixed the problem of no indicators( strange that they still work when locking/unlocking but not when you need them)

So in an effort to fix this, I've (rashly) bought a Golf Mk4 indicator/wiper stalk pair in the vague hope that they'll fit the octy. Are they the same? (Bit late to ask now I've bought it! )

I forgot to add, changing the hazard relay hasn't sorted it.

Did you try spraying some switch cleaner into the indicator switch?

no mate. It's not my car. But I'm going to go and help the owner with it on Sunday week (30th).

I'd try switch cleaner first m8, swapping the switches involves taking the steering wheel and airbag off

and at that point you might as well fit a CC stick

The switches separate don't they, and can be assembled around the column?

At the risk of sounding totally thick, where do you spray the cleaner exactly? Can you get to where the contacts are? (I don't mean the connector block contacts)

If you look at the switches you'll see where they're bolted to the column, I doubt they'll come off without taking the wheel off.

Update: problem seems to be fixed by replacing the twin stalks with the Golf item I mentioned earlier in the thread.

My Bora started doing this the other day. Love google though as i thought at first it was the relay on the hazard switch. I have bought some contact cleaner and doused the inside of the stalk with it (before i try and take the wheel off!) but haven't been out in it yet to see if it has cured it.
