Rear fogs always on

Featured Replies

I have a 2002 Fabia 2.0. The rear fogs are on continuously (i.e. both filaments in the rear light bulbs), whether I have them switched on or not. I have taken each side's bulb out in turn (to check if there is an internal short) but it makes no difference. All the other lights are OK, including the front fogs. Any ideas?

Any sign of strange happenings when applying the brakes or switching on the indicators, that would mean a dodgy earth.

Otherwise there must be a short circuit elsewhere in the wiring loom. Have you had any work done on the electrical system recently, eg. fitting of stereo amp.

I may be wrong, but generally fog light bulbs only have one filament in, so I would say that the bulbs your talking about are for the tail/stop light. In which case it could be the switch on the brake pedal.

Only a suggestion.

Also, the Fabia only comes with one rear fog (as I have found out). Are you sure that it's a fog and not just the brake light always on and just confusing you?

Pretty sure my 2001 car has two fog lights too, so maybe it's something they've dropped in newer cars. I'd imagine it's pretty hard to confuse them with the brake lights as the 3rd LED light would be on also........

Check this out Chris:

I wasnt sure so asked.

Seems like the Fabia has just one fog.

I suggested maybe the brake as it is stronger than side lights and maybe the LED brake light is wired up in a different way as it needs a different current I would have thought, possibly stronger.

Are the bulbs seated in the bulbholders correctly?

Are they exactly the right bulbs - there are at least two different patterns for the pins which locate the bulbs, IIRC. Skoda dealer will have them.

There is normally only one rear fog light (driver's side) but there is a dual filament bulb both sides. If the nearside rear fog light is lighting up, it must be 'stealing' current from the sidelight filament.

Or how about something metallic behind the carpet that's shorting across the circuit board (either side)?

That was it! When the light cluster is put back into the unit, it is easy to jog the bulbs a little - just enough to cause some short somewhere. The strange thing is, I already checked this with the clusters dangling in the boot - all bulbs apparently seated correctly. Maybe I will bend the contacts a bit tighter against the base of the bulbs. By the way, there is only a fog light on the offside (unless I have still got a short.

the fog light bulbs are dual filament, and the same bulb is in both sides (whats the point of having just one single and one dual. it would be a apin to remember when it comes to LHD and RHD versions)

Also they are fitted to both sides of the rear lights, but only the offside one is wired up. you can rig the other one to work as well with a bit of wire connected to the fog light that works and the multi plug of the one that does not. piece of cake to do.
