Making the turbo Tubes longer

Featured Replies

Hi

What the implications of making the Tubes longer in the turbo system ie from the turbo to the intercooler to the manifold? coudl there be a substantial drop in boost pressure..?

Thanks

Joel

sometimes if the pipework isnt designed properly... more often than not you see increased lag.

i know why your asking though and i wouldnt worry too much, theres enough people here with FMIC that dont suffer from any of the above.

im thinking of exprementing with diffrent routes to the intercooler and am aiming to come up with a cheaper way or getting an FMIC for everyone....you can get cheaper universal FMIC for tenth of the price but they have the air IN and air OUT and each end not both at one end hence the question ;)

Doesn't necessarily need to have inlet and output at the same end.

I did have a link to an Australian i/c site on i/c design...seemed to have misplaced it....was very good....will try and find it again.

Found it:

FMIC

Allard do an big intercooler that flows top right to left. The inlet tube comes in over the top of the radiator (after some cutting of metal work). Very neat installation, though does mean there's a lot of pipe work to remove if you want to do anything on the clutch/gearbox.

Sounds interesting Joel, keep us posted :)

Adrian that site is very good and looking at the pics of the intercoolers on here and reading that id start to question the design of them lol.... they say and intercooler with inlets at the left and right hand side of the intercooler offer more effciency when compaired to one with the inlets at the same end....

what is the flow direction of the turbo system??

turbo to manifold or the other way round ??

Joel

how cheap is cheaper joel roughly? like the sound of this though...

How about fitting a SEAT Ibiza or TT inlet manifold, the throtle housing is on the r/h side, then you could have a flow thru I/C and less pipe work.

It is a good site and I wondered the same as you after reading.

However, I guess everything is a compromise....both exit on same side but have shorter pipes.....exit at opposite side have longer pipes and potential pressure drop.

Should PM Wayne from ProAlloy...he would be able to tell you why the design are the way they are......I think his username is Wazzer.

true but also you woudl not have a rather nice looking shiny intercooler poking out the front of your bumper ;):D

Another option for you...charge cooler from the Jabba IHI kit.

Yep you don't see it but it's pretty effective. Ask Badger Bill for details.

whats a charge cooler?

I used to run the CC on my ibiza, but its pre-rad was too small to cope with track abuse. Fine on the road but would heatsoak eventually and take an age to recover. It still lives on Jans 1.8T Lupo tho and works well on there (std turbo car)

FMIC is nice if you can fit one in. CC is fine when you cant so long as you have a large enough pre-rad to shed the heat.

I really like the look of the Forge one, but it is a heck of a lot of money, can someone who has one fitted please say whether you consider it was a worthwhile investment?

Joel, have u thought about putting in vents in the wheel arch to allow more air to get to the standard IC.

Joel, have u thought about putting in vents in the wheel arch to allow more air to get to the standard IC.

A couple of suggestions:

1) vent in arch.

2) water spray on i/c

3) water injection.

I've done the vent...can't feel any difference.

External water spray is quite good...ask TaviaRS. Water injection...fine water mist injected into the inlet air stream...can't remember if it's pre or post i/c...apparently works very works especially if you use methonyl based windscreen wash. Both utilse the water from the washer bottle....get the larger one from the Elegance/L&K.

I have aquamist water injection also.. and on a car which runs >40'C induction temps regularly I would say go for it... Good results to be had.

Remembering the weather mat get warmer and this will be more significant assuming we have warm weather.

is this the system they sell on ebay?

Not sure bit I know you can get this Aquamist from Jabba....seen the kit and it looks good quality.

FMIC or water injection?? Decisions, decisions. ;):D

On nooooo now i cant decide :( ;) though i guess water injection is a lot cheaper.. or how about both :)

Yep...you can run both....water mist is approx half the price of the FMIC....another spanner in the works for ya. ;):D
